About E25 000 raised st sterling EQ show
MBABANE – About E25 000 was raised at the KOBE – Ramokgadi Advanced Learning Academy fundraising concert which took place at the Woodlands Restaurant in Ezulwini last week Friday.
The fundraiser featured South African Award winning pop sensation, Sterling Electric Quartet who gave an outstanding performance.
The four- piece band performed exciting contemporary versions of well-known classics such as ‘Toccata’ and ‘Carmina Burana’, the African favourite ‘Mbube’, legendary instrumentals from Caravans and Chic Corea’s Spain.
The turn out was not a good one however as the audience made up of about 50 people.
The founder of the free music institution, Geoff Ramokgadi, said the money will be used for the purchase of musical instruments for the music school which is said to open in January next year. Ramokgadi said he was not happy with the proceeds as his goal was to generate much more than E100 000.
"It is too little but it will have to do as we will use it to purchase musical instruments for the music school. I was hoping to have raised more than E100 000 but what’s done is done."
Ramokgadi during a short interval at the fundraiser, where the Sterling EQ band was changing outfits said when he was 17-years-old and living in Rustenburg, South Africa, he had a skirmish with his teacher and just as he walked away he told the teacher that one day he would own a school.
Fulfilled
That school is the KOBE – Ramokgadi Advanced Learning Academy which has been under construction for the past 11 years and is situated in Ezulwini.
"We still have to buy desks and chairs, but nothing quite makes me more fulfilled than knowing that my dream has come true and will be contributing to the Swazi child," Ramokgadi said.
He then thanked Sterling EQ for their generous support.
Sterling EQ is one of the successful instrumental bands South Africa has ever produced. Bringing virtuosity and glamour together in a breathtaking showcase of stylistic fusion, the super group has collaborated with music legends such as Boney M, Snow Patrol and Johnny Clegg.
