Girl (15) forced to marry man (60)
MBABANE – A 15-year-old primary school girl has been given away by her impoverished family to be the wife of a 60 year old man.
This was heard yesterday at the national court after the man’s relative was arrested and charged for beating up the girl who was forced into a marriage (kwendziswa).
The girl is aged below 16, which is the age of sexual consent as well as below 18, which is the marriageable age for females in Swaziland.
The girl was beaten after she was accused of being involved in a relationship with a teenage boy. The man, who is a brother to the complainant, appeared yesterday at the national court before court President, Azariah Ndzimandze. He is charged with assault.
It is said that the pupil, name withheld for ethical reasons, was seriously assaulted by the accused after he allegedly found her in an intimate position with the teenage boy.
The accused told the court that the girl was to be married to a 60 year old man through the custom of kwendziswa. It was ascertained that the 60 year old man is currently taking care of the family and her school fees.
The girl’s hubby was also present in court during the case.
The assailant was sentenced to six months in prison with E180 option of a fine.
He paid the fine.
The girl is attending school in the capital city however, the name of the school is withheld as ethically the girl cannot be identified because she is a minor.

E180 fine for such a crime? No wonder Swaziland is so backwards, the law doesn't take anything seriously. That's disgusting! What about the fact that she is a minor? Are they not charging anyone for that? She is a sex slave! This is all about sex, what could a 60 year old man possibly have in common with a 15 year old? Nothing that would justify their so called marriage!

As a teenager myself I discourage such behavior, we are the future generation and if we are still treated in this manner what will be left of us. I feel that the fine is too low because he has violated her rights as a child.

This is just the beginning there are more problems to come. But my main worry is what do they expect from such a young child to do to such an old man. Weren’t there any women in their thirties upwards that this mkhulu can take instead of this young child? I feel for the young girl but there is nothing you can do as they say desperate situations call for desperate measures. Unicef or save the children must save this child.
