Judge Esther Ota promoted

MBABANE – His Majesty King Mswati III has promoted High Court Judge, Esther Ota as a Judge of the Supreme Court together with two other foreign judges with immediate effect.
This brings the complement of the Supreme Court of Swaziland to 11 judges, a first in its history.
Judge Ota from Nigeria has been in the country as a High Court Judge since September 2010 on secondment by the Commonwealth Secretariat.
The appointment was made by the head of state on July 22, 2012, according to Legal Notice No. 105 of 2012.
She has been appointed together with two Ghanaian Judges of the Supreme Court Dr Kofi Date-bah and SA Brobbey.
"In exercise of the powers conferred upon me by Section 153 of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Swaziland Act 2005, I, Mswati III, King and Ingwenyama of Swaziland do hereby appoint Esther Awo Ota as Judge of the Supreme Court with immediate effect until further notice," read the notice.
Judge Ota joins Judges Bheki Maphalala and Philip Levinsohn in the Supreme Court as she too will not relinquish her position as Judge of the High Court. Member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) Sibusiso Shongwe said how Judge Ota would work would be determined by the Chief Justice Michael Ramodibedi.
He said like Judge Bheki Maphalala, Justice Ota would work as a High Court judge when the Supreme Court is not sitting. The Supreme Court sits for two sessions per year, in May and in November.
Efforts to get comment from the JSC Secretary, Lorraine Hlophe proved futile as she did not answer her phone when called yesterday. She was called three times at 4:50pm, 6:30pm and 6:53pm.
The three are expected to be sworn-in in November, when the Supreme Court sits for its last session of the year.
They are expected to take an oath together with two other judges who were recently appointed, Judges Levinsohn and Benjamin Odoki the Chief Justice of Uganda.
