Married in May, divorced by December

MBABANE – Only 17 months after their whirlwind wedding, whose stylish reception was hosted in the United States of America, Minister Hlobisile Ndlovu and Pastor Sam Fidelis are divorcing.
The Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs has filed divorce papers at the Pretoria High Court where she wants her marriage to Fidelis nullified. Even though contents of the papers she filed remain unknown, Ndlovu confir-med to the Times SUNDAY that she and Fidelis were going their separate ways. The minister said pursuing the divorce proceedings in South Africa as opposed to Swaziland was advantageous.
She believes there will be less publicity in South Africa because Fidelis is not a public figure there. Again, the divorce will not hog headlines and receive wide publicity in the Swazi media. The two estranged lovebirds tied the knot at the Orion Hotel in Pigg’s Peaks in May 2011, in an event that was punted as the wedding ceremony of the year due to the event’s pure class and the people who attended it. It was completed in New York where a few selected friends of the couple were flown – all expenses paid – to celebrate the union in style.
Ndlovu asked not to disclose reasons for the annulment of the marriage. "There are certain conditions which I need not breach if I want the divorce process to be smooth and quick. One of these is that I should not talk about the matter in the media. I don’t want to appear as if I am out to tarnish Sam’s good name," she said.
She said breaching a divorce settlement sometimes prolonged the court procee-dings and resulted in the order nullifying the marriage taking over three years to materialise. The dissolution of this sensational marriage comes shortly after Ndlovu was allegedly found by Fidelis in an uncompromising position with a male companion at the Oliver Tambo International Airport VIP Lounge about two months ago. The male companion was said to have been found leaning on Ndlovu.
Explaining this incident, Ndlovu said: "Sam overre-acted after he found the male com-panion comfor-tably sitting next to me." Recalling the incident, the minister said Fidelis suddenly pounced on her. The incident happened in September 2012. "He angrily asked why the man was sitting next to me in such a comfortable way.
I responded by asking why he wanted to know. I think my response angered him because that was when he assaulted me," she said. She said Fidelis used fists and also kicked her during the scuffle. "The man, whom he was accusing me of being in an intimate position with, did not come to my rescue. Neither did he say any word except for walking out and calling security. In fact, the man was shocked at the way Sam reacted," she said. She said the reason her companion did not intervene was because of the traditional belief that ‘one should not interfere in family squabbles.’
"Bewungalamula yini wena indvo-dza ishaya umfati wayo?" she asked, meaning, "Would you intervene if a husband beat his wife in front of you?" Ndlovu however explained that she was in good terms with Fidelis. This publication also got hold of two of Ndlovu’s family members who, in separate interviews, confirmed that the minister was getting divorced.
"We are aware that she has filed for divorce in South Africa. However, the matter has not yet been heard in court," said one of the family members, who asked not to be named.
Being married to a minister...
MBABANE – Minister Hlobisile Ndlovu says she has noted that Pastor Sam Fidelis never accepted that her line of duty would require her to mingle with male dignitaries.
This is despite that the man of the cloth made a promise to the minister’s family that the marriage would not interfere with her duties as a Cabinet minister. She said at times, Fidelis would wait for her in the lounge while she attended meetings and conferences with male dignitaries.
"Since I am the only female minister who is part of the SADC delegation, Fidelis would accompany me to these meetings," she said. She explained that before the unfortunate and widely publicised incident at OR Tambo, Fidelis never at any point showed signs of jealousy or confronted her for mingling with male dignitaries.
"I think at O.R Tambo, Fidelis exploded and melted whatever grief he had had about my political duties," she said. To confirm her suspicions, Ndlovu said a colleague told her that Fidelis once openly spoke about how it pained him to watch his wife mingle with other high-ranking men.
The Times SUNDAY had hopes to ask Fidelis about this when he was called at least four times on Saturday, November 17, 2012. However, he opted to exercise his right not to comment.
Hlobi, Qhawe dine together
EZULWINI – Customers at the prestigious Calabash Restaurant were last Wednesday left with more questions than answers.
This was after they spotted Hlobisile Ndlo-vu, Minister of Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs, dining with ex-husband Qhawe Mamba, the Channel Swazi boss.
The two have, however, explained that the reunion was only meant to celebrate their daughter’s birthday.
The daughter, Gcinizwi Mamba, was also present at the gathering. She was turning 18.
Ndlovu and Mamba have two children.
birthday
Minister Ndlovu, who has filed divorce papers against Pastor Sam Fidelis, the man she married in May 2011, said they were only celebrating Gcinizwi’s birthday.
Ndlovu said this last Wednesday. This was before she spoke about her divorce with Fidelis.
"If you had come to the restaurant, you would have taken nice pictures of Qhawe and I together," she said.
Mamba on Thursday confirmed having lunch with Ndlovu. "Yes, it is true that we had lunch together at Calabash Restaurant. We were celebrating my daughter’s birthday. She was turning 18," he said. Mamba, however, explained that they are in good terms with Ndlovu.
"We are not enemies as we normally call and speak to each other. It is not the first time we have had lunch together ," he said.
Asked about his opinion on the minister’s divorce, Mamba could only say, "I don’t know anything about any divorce but I can recall that I still have the footage of Hlobisile’s wedding. Do you want me to repeat the footage on TV?" he asked.
