ELWANDLE – Three vicious boerboel dogs attacked and killed a woman on Tuesday night.

The 45-year-old Thembi Dlamini of lwandle was returning from a local tavern when she was mauled by the vicious dogs at around 9pm. She was about 100 metres from her home.

Dlamini was certified dead on arrival at the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital (RFM).

The dogs belong to a Young family.

One of the deceased’s brothers, Patrick Du Pont, who is a police officer, said the family was still shocked at the incident.

"This is very unfortunate, especially because I was informed that one of the gates had been left open. What has happened has caused doubt about the dogs’ owner’s ability to control them," Du Pont said.

He narrated how his sister was dragged by the dogs on the ground until help arrived in the form of a group of passers-by who raised an alarm

"The family is still traumatised as the people who rescued her from the dogs told us that they found her screaming in pain and gasping for air. She bled a lot, which accounts for her failure to survive," Du Pont said.

He said the dogs bit her around the neck and tore the flesh off her shoulders.

"Neighbours tried ringing the bell at the gate to the Young homestead several times, but there was no response. Up to this time (11am yesterday) the family has not come to engage us in talks concerning the horrible incident."

"There was no available transport at the scene to rush her to hospital in time and when it finally did it was too late," Du Pont said.

The deceased leaves behind eight children and she will be buried on Sunday at Gundvwini. Director of Veterinary Services, Dr Xolani Dlamini, said the dogs were unlikely to have been infected by rabies. He said dogs infected with the disease do not kill victims. When asked about the law on killer dogs, Dlamini said it was up to the police to decide whether the dangerous dogs would be killed or what.

"Nothing has been reported to us on the matter. However, the police would have to decide what to do with such dogs," Dr. Dlamini said.

The deceased made a living through washing people’s clothes and running errands for teachers at Lwandle Primary School.

COMMENTS:

 - My heartfelt condolences go out to the deceased's family. Now that I have heard that what the law says about killer dogs I understand why we have been and still are suffering as members of the community at MAFUTSENI. Since it is up to the police on whether to kill or not killer dogs, none of them at our nearest police station wants to pull the trigger on the Deputy Police Commisioner's dogs who have continued to be a manace to the society( attacking people and other domestic animals we are rearing) day and night. They even attack us in our our own homesteads but nothing has been done, even after reporting to the owners.
