Three political party leaders summoned
MBABANE – Leaders of political organisations have been summoned to the Police Headquarters today, where they will be questioned on the planned political debate.
Former King’s Private Secretary Sam Mkhombe, who is Sive Siyinqaba’s mouthpiece, was summoned with NNLC President Dr Alvit Dlamini and Human Rights Lawyer Thulani Maseko.
All three were scheduled to be panellists during a commemoration of the ban of political parties to be held at the Greater Alpha Restaurant this afternoon.
Political parties were banned by decree on April 12, 1973. Meanwhile, summoning leaders of political formations is now not uncommon ahead of a planned activity that is banned by the state.
All three leaders confirmed having received calls from senior police officers summoning them to the police headquarters at 9am. Mkhombe said he would adhere to the summons this morning. "I see no problem with the summons. I will answer whatever questions they ask me," he said.
Meanwhile, Dr Dlamini said he would also appear before the officers as per the summons. "Police officers came to me and said I must report to Police Headquarters at 9am. They did not tell me the reasons but I will comply with the order," he said.
Lawyer Thulani Maseko said he was called by the Bhunya Station Commander, who said he was acting on instruction from superiors.
"He said they want to speak about the issue of tomorrow’s (today) debate. I will go and find out what they want to say." Maseko said he was not shaken by the police summons as he had not planned to do any criminal activity today.
Police Public Relations Officer Superintendent Wendy Hleta said the three must comply with the summons if there is nothing to hide. When asked if the commemoration was banned, she said "I know nothing about a commemoration."
