DON’T USE CULTURE TO ABUSE HUMAN RIGHTS
Our nation, Eswatini although small in size, is generally a vibrant place, renowned for its rich cultural heritage, hospitality and respect.
However, in the recent past, I have noticed a growing divide between two opposing factions: Conservatives and progressive elements. This division is becoming increasingly pronounced, because it reflects deeper societal tensions largely manifesting themselves in hatred and intolerance between the two camps. This is a real cause for concern.
From traditional dances to lively festivals, the customs and cultural practices of our nation are intricately interwoven into the fabric of daily life. However, beneath the vibrant surface of cultural expression exists a more intricate narrative - one that uncovers the dynamic nature of culture and the tensions it can engender within society. Understanding the role of culture in our kingdom is crucial for every individual and the community as a whole; it acts as a vital cohesive element that nurtures a profound sense of belonging and identity among its citizens.
Weaves
Culture is not simply a collection of customs and traditions; it is the very essence that weaves together the lives of individuals, families and communities. It forges deep connections that unite people, honouring their shared histories, values and experiences. In eSwatini, cultural practices are often commemorated through vibrant festivals, traditional ceremonies and communal gatherings - all of which reinforce the bonds that tie individuals to one another and to their heritage. Without any shadow of doubt, we are - or used to be - the envy of not only neighbouring countries, but global ones as well and are famous for preserving our cultural heritage. Cultural activities and customs such as the Umhlanga Reed Dance attract tourists from countries far and wide across the globe.
However, like many cultures around the globe, the rich traditions of the country are not immune to exploitation. There are regrettable instances where a minority within the society take advantage of cultural practices for personal gain, thereby undermining the very essence of the traditions that are intended to foster unity and community spirit. The exploitation of cultural practices can manifest in numerous ways, including the appropriation of traditional customs for profit; often disregarding their significance or the communities from which they arise. Such actions create a concerning divide: Those who feel marginalised or disrespected by these exploitative practices have, however, developed a sense of resentment towards their cultural heritage, perceiving it as something that has been tainted, abused or misrepresented.
Currently, Eswatini is grappling with an escalating divide between conservative groups that staunchly uphold traditional values and progressive factions advocating for reform and change. This schism or divide has generated significant tensions, complicating the social fabric of the nation and resulting in conflicts among different groups. Although these tensions are palpable, it is crucial that we adopt a positive (and an embracing) stance that will enable - or trigger - a glimmer of hope for dialogue and understanding. Without the latter, we are doomed; the hatred and bigotry we continue witnessing will further alienate and estrange conservatives and progressives from each other. We certainly cannot afford that! However, this situation demands our attention, because without mutual or bilateral respect, progress becomes elusive.
Conservatives often cling to customs and practices (which) they deem essential to their identity and lifestyle; perceiving any challenge to these traditions as a threat to their cultural integrity. However, progressives contest specific practices they regard as infringements on human rights or barriers to personal freedoms, advocating for a more inclusive and equitable society. This struggle between these factions is conspicuous (because) it reflects a broader dialogue concerning culture and identity in an ever-evolving world. Although the differences are stark, both sides must engage in a multifaceted conversation.
This discord hinders the potential for peaceful coexistence, creating an atmosphere where constructive dialogue is often overshadowed by animosity and misunderstanding. The failure to bridge the gap between these contrasting viewpoints has often resulted in a cycle of conflict, where each side has become more entrenched in its stance, further alienating the other.
In such an environment, the rich cultural heritage of the kingdom now risks being eclipsed by division and strife, instead of being celebrated as a source of strength and unity.
To advance, it is essential for the citizens of Eswatini to engage in open and respectful dialogues that address the concerns of individuals who believe that a select few - privileged groups -tend to exploit culture. It is crucial to recognise that for culture to genuinely fulfil its role as a unifying force, respect must be reciprocal. Those who cherish cultural traditions should be prepared to heed the concerns of those who question these practices, particularly when human rights are involved. The voices of the marginalised must be amplified; their experiences ought to shape the development of cultural customs. It is through this ongoing dialogue that culture can evolve from a mechanism of division into a pathway for inclusivity and mutual respect.
However, achieving this transformation requires commitment and openness from all parties involved, because only then can a truly inclusive cultural landscape emerge. Although the challenges may seem daunting, this collective effort is essential for fostering understanding and respect within society. Cultural identity acts as a fundamental pillar of our kingdom, underpinning the very fabric of our society and fostering a sense of belonging and continuity among its citizens. Our diverse traditions and practices significantly shape the daily lives of individuals within the country.
Engagement
However, as I previously indicated, many cultures worldwide encounter the challenge of certain practices that may infringe upon individual rights. It is imperative (indeed) that these issues are addressed with both transparency and thoughtfulness. Community engagement in these discussions is essential, because we must discern which cultural elements are vital for preserving identity and which require revaluation. Although this process may be complex, it is necessary for the evolution of a more inclusive society.
Traditions, rituals and ceremonies associated with, say, the elderly play a crucial role in shaping our national identity. However, some cultural practices have become inextricably intertwined with personal or political gain, which can lead to abuses that profoundly affect individuals - especially those belonging to marginalised groups - and foster divisions in our community.Discussions about these practices are often stifled by a dominant culture of forced silence triggered by the fear of criticising some cultures perceived by others in our communities as abusive, in which questioning certain customs might be perceived as a threat to national identity, authority or community integrity.
This silence, consequently, can perpetuate injustices and uphold the status quo. Although confronting these issues is difficult, we must do so in a respectable and positive manner in order to cultivate a more inclusive society. We cannot deceive ourselves and maintain the facade that everything is idyllic, particularly when it comes to the escalating public concern - and the palpable resentment - regarding the purportedly aggressive behaviour claimed in recent times by a number of people to be exhibited by the Water Party regiment (Bemanti) towards some citizens of the country. This cultural practice is said to have roots that extend back to time immemorial. Proponents of this tradition regard it as sacred.
Our Constitution protects freedom of religion, practice of cultural beliefs, etc. Proponents of different religions and cultures have an obligation to respect these rights and cultures without subjecting others who do not, to persecution. Over the years, allegations of mistreatment towards residents during the Water Party regiment’s journey to the sea have, unfortunately, surfaced with increasing frequency. Consequently, a growing number of citizens now dread and abhor this season when the regiment embarks on its annual passage to the sea.
I sincerely hope that this concern — if it is valid - will be addressed by the appropriate authorities. Alleged reports of some of the regiment’s members forcefully gaining entry into private premises (homes) and allegedly extorting money and other valuables from occupants of these premises are very confounding and disconcerting. Strangely, there has even been recent allegations of kidnapping of some occupants of these private premises for arcane reasons. For peace to prevail, it important to investigate and address these concerns.
It is crucial for every citizen to be at liberty to embrace (or not) this culture, allowing those who do to freely and wholeheartedly support the practice of kubendlulisa ngeku titsandzela by generously providing financial donations and similar forms of support. That said, addressing divisions of cultural practices concerns demands a delicate balance. On the one hand, there is a strong need to preserve the nation’s heritage. On the other hand, there is the imperative to protect individuals from practices that may undermine their rights, dignity and freedom. For instance, practices linked to gender roles, age hierarchies, and socioeconomic disparities often manifest in harmful ways, reinforcing inequalities that have no place in a modern and progressive society.
Affirmative dialogue plays a crucial role in fostering an environment where individuals feel secure enough to express their concerns. This process often commences with community engagement initiatives that promote open conversations. Open and honest discussion forums, as well as public meetings, can function as vital platforms for individuals to articulate their perspectives on cultural practices without reservation. In this context, both community leaders and citizens can contemplate the cultural elements they value, while also illuminating traditions that might adversely affect their fellow citizens.
The significance of education in these discussions cannot be understated; it is essential. Educating the youth about their rights and the significance of individual dignity can cultivate a new generation that appreciates both cultural heritage and personal freedom. School curriculums - such as arts and culture - might include lessons on the historical context of Eswatini’s cultural practices, while also highlighting human rights, because this dual approach can nurture a respect for tradition while also encouraging critical thinking regarding which practices warrant re-evaluation. However, as we embrace these complex dialogues, it is important to remain vigilant about the potential pitfalls that may arise.
Addressing abuses within cultural practices also involves emphasising those who exploit tradition for their own personal or political gain. Individuals in power frequently manipulate cultural narratives to sustain control or justify actions that infringe upon the rights of others (this is a serious concern). The community must foster a resilient stance against these abuses, utilising for instance, social media and local platforms to expose unjust practices and advocate for meaningful reform. This can be achieved in a respectful and engaging manner; however, the appalling use of derogatory language often directed at the leaders of the country must be condemned in the strongest terms possible. Although these leaders may warrant criticism (and rightly so in some instances), the approach taken should reflect a commitment to constructive criticism, dialogue rather than hostility.
Homogeneous
One of the unique attributes of our country is its homogeneous ethnic composition. This rarity presents an opportunity for the nation to strengthen its cultural identity while addressing its internal differences. By recognising and cherishing the shared ties of ethnicity, this beautiful kingdom can cultivate an environment where diverse opinions are welcomed and respected. In conclusion, Eswatini’s rich culture is both a source of pride and a potential point of contention.
By addressing the concerns of all members of society and fostering respectful dialogue, the country can move towards a harmonious coexistence. The journey is definitely not easy, but with commitment and open-mindedness, Eswatini can turn its cultural strengths into a powerful tool for unity, ensuring that everyone feels included in the narrative.By engaging transparently in dialogues about culture, our nation can begin to bridge significant divides and foster unity. The path to a harmonious society hinges on the willingness of its populace to confront uncomfortable truths and realities.
Only then can the country genuinely honour its cultural heritage while ensuring that all individuals have access to their rights. The transition to a more inclusive culture is not a simple endeavour; however, through collective dialogue, education and a steadfast commitment to justice, Eswatini can enhance both its identity and the well-being of its citizens.
Is this too difficult to achieve? You be the judge.
