EMBRACE RESPONSIVE LEADERSHIP
The reluctance to embrace responsive political leadership represents a pivotal factor contributing to the downfall of a number of political governments worldwide; and, its significance cannot be overstated.
However, this issue manifests in various forms, often leading to detrimental consequences for both governance and societal cohesion. Although some may argue that other elements play a role, the absence of adaptive leadership is particularly salient. Because of this, the imperative for leaders to cultivate responsiveness becomes increasingly evident. Before I delve deeper into the subject, it would be proper for me to define briefly what is meant by ‘responsive leadership’ and also examine what basic, responsive, political leadership constitutes.
Later in the article, I will also briefly mention how lack of responsive political leadership largely led to the downfall of one of the most feared and brutal autocratic leaders (and his government) the world has ever known - former Syrian president Bashar al-Asaad who was toppled two weeks or so ago by Syrian rebels. What then, is responsive (political) leadership?
Responsive leadership transcends being merely a fashionable concept in governance; it represents a deliberate, action-oriented methodology for steering communities and nations to peace and harmonious relationships. In the political arena, leaders must surpass superficial rhetoric, genuinely engaging with their citizens to understand and cater for their needs.
Significance
It is also crucial to examine how does this style of leadership operate and why it holds important significance in modern politics. Many global leaders - specifically in undemocratic governments - have dismally failed to lead their nations in a leadership style which aligns with the aspirations (democratic) of their populace. This has often led to disgruntlement with such leaders and it had more often than not, led to violent internal conflicts and civil wars. The Syrian case is a classic example. In politics, responsive leadership necessitates a commitment to active listening, adaptation and proactive responses to public concerns. There should be no room for arrogance and despising the people who contribute to the development of their nations.
A responsive leader does not adhere strictly to a predefined trajectory; rather, they recalibrate their approach when circumstances or the desires of their constituents demand it. They elevate the voices of those they serve and utilize their authority to effectuate substantial change. It should not be solely about them demanding that the populace be subservient to their every whim. Leaders are in leadership positions to serve the people and not the opposite. This strategy fosters a government that is flexible, empathetic and authentically representative.
Unlike rigid leadership models, where decisions remain immutable, (and are often taken at the whim of leaders in complete disdain of consulting their people ), responsive leaders evaluate evolving situations and adjust their tactics accordingly. They function with humility - not adopting haughty attitudes - acknowledging their errors, accepting accountability and inviting feedback from diverse perspectives.
However, this approach requires a delicate balance, as leaders must navigate the complexities of public opinion while remaining true to their vision. Yes, not all opinions can be accommodated and/or implemented, but effort should be made to implement those that have a bearing on the development of the country and the welfare of the populace. Although challenges abound, the potential for creating a more inclusive and responsive governance structure is both compelling and necessary. Responsive leadership encompasses several essential traits (or characteristics) that facilitate effective governance.
Responsive
Adaptability is paramount and given that political situations rarely remain static, responsive leaders must adjust policies as new challenges emerge (rather than adhering to outdated plans).
Empathy also plays a crucial role; it enables leaders to connect with the feelings and struggles of the populace they serve. This trait profoundly influences decision-making, allowing leaders to align their choices with human realities. Citizens of many countries suffer from dire poverty, while their leaders live lavish lifestyles, unashamedly flaunting their wealth - such wealth sponsored by the taxes of the people. These leaders often brazenly loot public funds with impunity in corrupt darlings.
Effective communication is indispensable in responsive leadership. Such leaders demonstrate proficiency in speaking, listening and ensuring that all voices are acknowledged. Their communicative efforts must reflect their actions, establishing a cohesive relationship between words and deeds. Transparency is equally vital: engaging in open dialogue about policies and goals cultivates trust among constituents. Leaders who candidly address challenges and propose solutions are more likely to gain public support. Furthermore, decisiveness is a critical characteristic of responsive leadership. Although listening is essential, leaders must also act swiftly and confidently when the situation demands it. This combination of traits fosters an environment conducive to productive governance and enhances the overall efficacy of leadership.
Critical
That said, one critical lesson leaders around the world can glean from the recent downfall of Syrian President Bashar al-Asaad (which occurred approximately two week ago on December 8) is the necessity of responsive governance. Leaders who neglect the needs and rights of those they govern inevitably face opposition in the long run. In the political landscape, opposition can often manifest violently. Syria was in a civil war for close to 13 years and this is an indicator that Assad’s leadership style was totally devoid of “responsive leadership” style.Assad epitomised raw malevolence. He tolerated no dissent. Analysts have characterized his presidency as “a highly personalist dictatorship,” which governed Syria as a totalitarian police state, marked by extensive human rights violations and severe repression of those who dared to oppose him.
Throughout the 2000s, the dreaded Mukhabarat (intelligence agency) agents executed, conducted routine abductions, arbitrary detentions and inflicted torture upon civilians. Numerous “show” trials were staged against dissidents, leading to the incarceration of journalists and human rights activists in Syrian prisons. His regime subjected political prisoners to brutal torture for years within facilities unfit for human habitation. His failure to address legitimate concerns and grievances, combined with an unwavering reliance on draconian repression, exacerbated the conflict in Syria. He consistently ignored advice from both domestic and international sources to cease the oppression of his people.
Finally, as is it more often the case with autocratic leaders...he was recently toppled, fled to Russia and was offered political asylum... A biblical verse from the Book of Galatians 6:7-9 serves as a poignant reminder: “A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” Former President Bashar al-Asaad finally reaped what he sowed.
He harboured an unwavering belief in his own invincibility; he trusted both the army and his clandestine police to assist him in preserving his grip on power. However, they were unable to save him.. He neglected the foreboding admonition of the Living God regarding tyrannical rulers, reminiscent of King Nebuchadnezzar of ancient Babylon: “20. Daniel answered and said: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, For wisdom and might are His. 2. And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wiseAnd knowledge to those who have understanding..” - Daniel 2:20-21
It is widely recognized that the early protests in Syria were largely peaceful and aimed at achieving modest reforms. However, these protests against Assad’s repressive regime eventually spiraled into a brutal civil war, highlighting the perilous consequences of state violence and the critical need for early, nonviolent conflict resolution. When leaders dismiss or criminalize dissent, they may unintentionally provoke larger and more destructive upheavals. This is particularly concerning, as it suggests that ignoring the voices of the people can lead to disastrous outcomes. While the reasons behind such actions may seem justified, the consequences often reveal a stark truth: leaders can impose oppressive rule on their citizens for decades, but eventually, those citizens will reach a breaking point and rise up.
In summary, responsive leadership is essential for effective governance because it fosters democratic participation and adaptability in the face of crises. This type of leadership prioritises the needs and voices of the populace; thus, it ensures that citizens feel heard and valued in the decision-making processes that affect their lives. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to extend my warmest wishes to all readers of this column, including the Management and staff of the Eswatini Times Group of Companies; as well as the nation at large, for a joyous and safe festive season.
Tumultuous
The year 2024 has been exceptionally tumultuous, filled with a multitude of challenges. However, through God’s grace and will, we are on the verge of concluding this year. May we all act responsibly and enjoy the festive season: let’s refrain from drinking and driving. It is important not to be abusive to your partners or to those who are less privileged. Remember, we are all created in God’s image; therefore, we are equal in His eyes. My condolences go out to all those who have lost loved ones throughout this year.
If divine providence permits, let us embark upon the forthcoming season of 2025 in safety. My deepest gratitude is extended to the Editor of this esteemed publication for (consistently) providing me the platform to articulate my thoughts, thus becoming the voice for the voiceless throughout the year. It was a taxing endeavour, fraught with apprehension. The Living God has continually inspired my writings and safeguarded me from those who perceived my “Brutal Truth” column as an encroachment upon their sensibilities. Glory be to God and His Son, Jesus Christ; Amen.
I embrace you with these comforting words from none other than our Redeemer, the Lord Jesus Christ: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid...” - John 14:27
Peace! Shalom! Have a great Sunday and week ahead...
