MBABANE – The re-admission of Swaziland into AGOA is envisaged to create between 5 000 and 10 000 jobs in the short term.

This projection was made by Federation of Swaziland Employers and Chamber of Commerce (FSE&CC) President Andrew le Roux yesterday.

He said the projection was on the basis of the number of businesses that had declared to invest in the kingdom should it be accepted back into the African Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA).

The president said mass job creation would be inevitable when also putting into consideration the fact that Swaziland’s re-admission into AGOA would definitely improve the way a lot of global investors and the world at large views the country from an investment perspective.

Anticipated

“Re-admission into AGOA will have great benefits for the country both in the long and short term especially for the textile and sugar industry.  It is anticipated that in the short term, between 5 000 and 10 000 jobs will be created as more investors will consider Swaziland as an investment destination,” said le Roux.

The FSE&CC president also urged local businesses to engage with the United States Embassy to expand their business portfolio as there were a number of other products that could be accepted into the US under AGOA which had previously not been tapped into. He also promised that FSE&CC would also avail information about AGOA that would help make local businesses make informed decisions.
“We are highly grateful to the Swazi Government to have achieved what most people felt was impossible,” said le Roux.
