OPEN LETTER TO THE COUNTRY

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Hey girls, I wasn’t here last week because I forgot I had a deadline. My editor texted me at 11am and I almost collapsed right where I stood.

Anyway we are back and this week I am addressing various issues, my own state of the nation address if you will...is that seditious? I hope not! I’ve been reading the papers and keeping abreast of national current affairs with a permanent scowl on my face. What is the matter with all of you? Let’s get into it.

Eswatini Pride

A few evenings ago I was on Twitter and saw a letter written by ‘concerned citizens of Eswatini’ and I was already wondering how this all encompassing sign off could purport this when I, a whole citizen of Eswatini, had not been polled.

The letter was criticising the upcoming Pride March that will be held next week Saturday, claiming that it was promoting homosexuality and the decline of our morals as a nation.

First of all, we have aspirant members of parliament kidnapping and killing children, mind you other citizens of Eswatini, and you dare speak about homosexuality being the thing that fosters the decline of national morals. Do you even think? The day after I saw this it was turned into a story in one of the nation’s publications and I was incensed.

It is irresponsible to give a platform to people who use those platforms to perpetuate oppression on others. Must I always educate you people on the International Bill of Human Rights and the contents therein? Because I’m tired of your lack of critical thinking and flagrant violation of any rights that don’t pertain to you.

The universal decriminalisation of LGBT rights is a human rights imperative.
People are calling homosexuality a ‘lifestyle’, meanwhile they haven’t been faithful to their spouses since the early 90s, are full blown alcoholics and will puff cigarette smoke rings in your face casually – now that’s a lifestyle. Opt out of it if you choose. I’m not debating you, these are facts.

Government girl wyd?

So His Majesty dissolved Parliament and Cabinet, they have to have cleared their desks by June 30. Has there ever been a more ineffectual Executive and Legislature in my history? I really don’t think so. Government can’t pay civil servants salaries and I’m flummoxed! Do you hear my big English! A girl is thoroughly perplexed – how are you governing when you cannot pay salaries to the people you employed?

Are we serious or are we on candid camera? All of our ministerial sectors are in shambles and I don’t understand any of it. Our Parliament played hot potato with the Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Bill until they eventually passed it with amendments the night before their dissolution.

Who cares about the citizens of this country empeleni? Entire men who claim to be the head of households spent months mulling over how to pass this Bill, if at all, and still keep these little ‘cultural’ privileges like harassing women and raping their own wives. I screamed in laughter because everything is pointless.
The women legislators didn’t stand up in the way they needed to either, coddling practices that endanger any part of the populace ends terribly for everyone. That’s that on that. I’m not debating.

Men defending  abusive rapper

A horrifying America rapper was shot dead this week.
This 20-year-old had served jail time for a myriad of crimes including viciously assaulting his girlfriend to the point where she needs reconstructive surgery on her eye; he locked her in a back room and sexually assaulted her with a braai fork. He also beat a homosexual cell mate almost to death for staring at him.

True to form the internet was split between ‘let the abusive homophobic man die the way he lived! Bye girl’ and ‘RIP I can’t believe people are celebrating your death you were so young and could change’.

Some forgiving you just need to leave to God because asking the demographics who were endangered by this man to mourn his death is mind boggling. If an abuser dies the world is safer for the abused.

That’s mathematics! A liSwati rapper joined the people who wished for him to RIP and it was funny to me because men love to move as though they are champions of GBV activism, but if you don’t believe it in your core your slip will always show. Debate among yourselves.

My point is you’re either going to want to do better and then actively go about it or you will choose to dwell comfortably in mediocrity and know all the corners of below par. It’s exhausting to think anyone could be comfortable not doing the best they can and not being the best version of themselves.
God and stretch fabric are forgiving, I’m not.
