INFLATION RATE UP BY 0.1 PER CENT

MBABANE – The inflation rate increased by 0.1 per cent last month compared to October, 2018.

This was disclosed by the Central Statistical Office in their monthly report for November 2018. The report states that the headline inflation rate in November 2018 (ie the annual percentage change in the CPI in November 2018 compared with that of November 2017) for the country was 5.3 per cent. This annual rate of inflation is 0.1 index points higher than the corresponding annual rate of 5.2 per cent observed in October 2018. The month on month inflation rate was 0.2 per cent.

Report

The report states that housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels which increased from 13.8 per cent in October 2018 to 14.1 per cent in November 2018.  The report states that materials for the maintenance and repair of the dwelling mainly contributed to the increased index. Also, food and non-alcoholic beverages increased from 0.1 per cent in October 2018 to 0.3 per cent in November 2018. The Central Statistical Office stated that food, such as fish and seafood; and mineral waters, soft drinks, fruit and vegetable juices largely contributed to the higher index in this category.

Further, recreation and culture decreased from 3.8 per cent in October 2018 to 3.0 per cent in November 2018. “Equipment for the reception, recording and reproduction of sound and pictures; and repair of audio visual, photographic and information-processing equipment mainly resulted in the decreased index in this category,” reads the report. Further, transport decreased from 4.0 per cent in October 2018 to 3.5  per cent in November 2018. The purchase of vehicles, such as motor cars and cycles; and Operation of personal transport equipment (namely lubricants) largely contributed to the decreased index in this category.
