CIC EMPOWERS ENTREPRENEURS
MBABANE – The Construction Industry Council (CIC) has empowered entrepreneurs in the construction industry.
The empowerment exercise saw CIC partner with Mananga College in empowering entrepreneurs with skills on project management, tendering and cost estimation. The Chief Executive Officer of CIC, Nhlanhla Dlamini, said the CIC as established by act of Parliament No.14 of 2013, had the mandate to regulate, promote and develop the construction industry in the country. Dlamini said for CIC to achieve part of the development aspect, they had developed the construction industry skills training and development of various skills in the industry.
“To inform training and capacity development initiatives, the council carried out a construction industry skills gap survey in 2017, which revealed that there was a shortage of skills in the industry,” Dlamini said.
He said to address the skills related issues as highlighted in the survey; the council had planned a number of capacity development initiatives to be rolled out during the last few months of the year. In his closing ceremony speech, the CEO said they had noted that during the workshops duration, there had been a 100 per cent attendance rate. The CEO highlighted that the training was attended by all stakeholders in the industry inclusive of quantity surveyors, project technicians, directors and manufacturers and suppliers, which he termed was an achievement.
Presentations
During the training, Dlamini said presentations by the Eswatini Standards Authority (ESWASA) and Eswatini Public Procurement Policy Authority (EPPRA) were an eye opener to the industry players. This, he said, would see the council developing a training programme for the next calendar year to include courses on quality, environmental issues, training on the EPPRA Act and the tendering process. Appreciating the course on behalf of contractors was Mandla Shabangu, who thanked CIC, Mananga College management, tutors and the participants. He said as a class they had benefitted a lot from the course as it broadened their reasoning in terms of the laws of the land when it came to procurement and standards.
