E6.61 PER TONNE FOR CANE GROWERS
MBABANE – Sugarcane farmers shall as of April 1, 2020 pay E6.61 per tonne following the imposition of the levy on sugarcane growers.
This levy came courtesy of Legal Notice No. 34 of 2020 which is the imposition of levy on Sugar Cane Growers Notice 2020.
This notice revoked Legal Notice No. 242 of 2018.
According to the Gazette No. 25 published on January 24, 2020, ‘the levy shall be at the rate of E6.61 per tonne of sucrose supplied to, and accepted, by a miller during the period of April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021.
The Minister of Agriculture, Jabulani Mabuza, through the gazette stated that the due date of the levy in respect of each delivery of sucrose during any mill-month (April 1 – March 31) shall be on the 10th day of the last day of the mill-month.
“In the absence of a satisfactory proof to the contrary, the miller shall be deemed to have accepted sucrose on the date of delivery of such sucrose to him.” The method of payment shall be effected in such a way that millers would deduct the levy imposed on each cane grower from the periodic payments made to such grower for sucrose supplied and shall remit the amounts of such levy to the Eswatini Cane Growers Association by the due date.
To this, the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Bongani Masuku, said the levy was remitted to the Eswatini Cane Growers Association to assist them in going about engaging in their duties.
He said the association was assisted the farmers; therefore, the levy was used to cover their overheads and the levy was reviewed annually based on the needs of the associations.
Masuku said the reason it was issued through a gazette was that it was a law and the ministry had to oversee the smooth implementation of it.
