MBABANE – Those interested in joining hands in the multi-billion Emalangeni Eswatini Rail Link (ESRL) project have up until tomorrow to forward their bids.
The deadline is tomorrow at 10am. Transnet and Eswatini Railways are looking for suitable partners to join them in developing the project. The two entities will be seeking suitable partners to fund the development of Eswatini Rail Link project and the upgrading of the adjacent rail networks. Approximately E29 billion of funding, in nominal terms (based on 2016 estimates), will be required to develop the project. The expression of interest (EOI) is being undertaken by to identify individuals or companies who are willing to participate in the development of the proposed new railway corridor underpinned by the construction of the new rail link between Lothair (South Africa) and Sidvokodvo (Eswatini) and upgrade of the adjacent rail networks. The aim of this EOI is to solicit insights and information from experts and interested parties which could be used to enhance the development of the Eswatini Rail Link. Environment approvals and related permits have been received for the project.
The land is being acquired for the entire project. Transnet and Eswatini Railway will be seeking partners to grow the freight volumes to the full capacity of the Eswatini Rail Link. Suitable partners will be sought to grow the volumes to beyond the 6.7 million tonnes that Transnet will divert to the ESRL on inception of operational phase of the project. Meanwhile, Transnet forecasts significant growth of general freight. Analysis shows that a significant proportion of the general freight is export-oriented, primarily through the ports of Richards Bay and Maputo. These ports are currently serviced by the Coal Line and the Eastern Mainline. The capacity on the Eastern Mainline capacity is constrained and the Coal Line is experiencing challenges in servicing general freight.
