ESWATINI RECORDS TRADE DEFICIT OF E288.5M

MBABANE - In April 2024, the country recorded a trade deficit of E288.5 million, compared to a surplus of E680.9 million in the preceding month.

Exports were down in the month, totalling E2.600 billion compared to the E3.570 billion in March 2024, year-on-year, this was an increase of 18.9 per cent. Imports recorded flat growth in the month of April amounting to E2.888 billion from E2.889 billion in the previous month, 16.6 per cent higher, year-on-year. The seasonally adjusted trade balance for April 2024 was E262.1 million, where seasonally adjusted exports amounted to E3.315 billion and seasonally adjusted imports were E3.053 billion. 

The country posted a positive cumulative trade balance of E765 million as at April 2024, compared to a positive trade balance of E739.3 million for the same period in 2023. Cumulative exports were E12.779 billion as at April 2024 compared to E11.055 billion in April 2023. Imports as at April 2024 also increased amounting to E12.014 billion, compared to E10.315 billion for the same period in 2023. South Africa remains the country’s major trading partner. with the market receiving 70.7 per cent of exports and 71.5 per cent of imports originating from there.
