MBABANE – Preliminary debt figures show that as at  June 30, 2024, the total public debt stood at E33.96 billion which is an equivalent of 39.12 per cent of GDP.

This is composed of domestic debt amounting to E17.86 billion, which is equivalent to 20.56 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) and external debt amounting to E16.10 billion which is equivalent to 18.54 per cent of GDP. Compared to the previous quarter which stood at E34.01 billion, the total public debt slightly decreased by about E58.82 million. This decrease can be attributable to the poor performance of Government Treasury bills and bond auctions in the domestic market.

Domestic debt stock slightly declined from E18.46 billion as at the end of  March 31, 2024 to E17.86 billion as at June 30, 2004. The decline can be attributable to the decrease in the uptake of Government Treasury bills and bonds due to under subscriptions in auctions over the period under review. Treasury bills slightly decreased from E3.70 billion as at March 31, 2024 to E3.23 billion. As at June 30, 20024. Domestic loans slightly increased from E1.79 billion to E1.80 billion as at June 30, 2024.
