MBABANE - Eswatini Beverages Limited (EBL) has elevated customer relations with the launch of its Retail Academy, designed specifically for liquor traders across the country.
This innovative programme began with digitally driven online lectures in Manzini and Mbabane this week. The Retail Academy engaged 200 liquor traders through workshops focused on optimal business operations. It aims to equip these businesses with essential skills, knowledge, and tools for sustainable success. EBL has committed to making this an ongoing initiative to benefit more of its customers in the future. The academy employs an online, data-based training platform. Each retailer receives a cell phone and is required to create a Google account to access the training app. Participants navigate through training modules, starting with four key areas that cover business growth strategies and product profitability. EBL’s Country Director, Doreen Tumureebire, highlighted that the Academy was a digital platform offering business development training in strategy, sales, operations, and finance. This training is intended to empower retailers and promote responsible business practices.

The EBL Retail Academy aligns with the Eswatini Government’s efforts to reduce unemployment by fostering sustainable businesses that support livelihoods and create job opportunities. Last year, EBL launched the Responsible Trader program in collaboration with the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade, Manqoba Khumalo, to ensure compliance with trading licences. The Retail Academy is part of a broader initiative to instill responsible trading practices among customers. Chief Commercial Officer Sonto Hlophe from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Trade commended EBL for its significant role in the national economy and its commitment to social responsibility. She emphasised that the timing of this training was crucial, given the challenges faced by many micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), including financial mismanagement and inadequate business planning.

Liquor traders who participated in the academy praised the programme. Gcibela Shabangu of Mkhwemba Wine and Malt Bar found the training valuable for understanding business strategies, legal compliance, and fiscal management. Assiena Mphandze of CDSJ Bottle Store appreciated the platform’s flexibility and the practical application of the lessons learned. Meanwhile, Xolani Matimba from Khanu Bottle Store found the interactive workshop effective, and Sherna Steixiera of Special Galaxy Bottle Store valued the self-driven learning approach and ongoing access to training materials.Overall, the participants are optimistic that the academy will significantly improve their business operations, demonstrating EBL’s commitment to technological advancement and retailer support.
