MBABANE – A 15-year-old boy miraculously survived when a scaffold collapsed on him during a storm at Simunye Fair on Sunday.

The wind that came with the storm was so powerful that it dismantled many tents that were set up in the area and caused the scaffold, which was adjacent to the wrestling ring, to collapse.
Fanalakhe Langwenya happened to be next to the ring when he was hit by some elements of the scaffold. The structure was used by security personnel. Langwenya is a pupil at Lubombo Central High School.

Transferred

According to his grandfather, Babe Khumalo, they were alarmed when they were called by the police in the afternoon to alert them on the matter.
He said they then rushed to Simunye Clinic where the police had taken the boy.

They then transferred him to Manzini Clinic. Describing the injuries, Khumalo said Langwenya had been hurt in most parts of his body, including the neck, knees and chest. “We were so alarmed when they called us because we feared he had been stuck by lightening, as they told us he was unconscious. When we found him his condition was still very bad,” he said.

He said they were thankful to God that he was now fine considering that he was in a bad state when he was fetched from Simunye.
Khumalo said his grandchild was then taken to Manzini Clinic, where he was admitted for a night.

Discharged

He also confirmed that Langwenya was discharged yesterday from the hospital because his condition had improved.
Police from the Simunye department confirmed the incident.
Besides the scaffold, many tents were blown by the storm and stall owners left them there as they rushed to seek cover.

Thea Litschka, who is one of the organisers of the event, confirmed that a boy was taken to the Simunye Clinic and said he was discharged at the same time because he was fine.
