MBABANE – His daughter insisted that he should attend the pageant saying seeing him among the audience would boost her confidence.

Little did he know that she would take the crown home. When Nelisiwe Shongwe’s name was called, her father Lucas was one of the happiest people. He could not hold back the tears  as he saw his only daughter crying as she was crowned the fairest of them all. Nelisiwe’s father joined her on stage and they both cried. As this happened, close family members celebrated while taking pictures of the queen.  “It’s like she knew she was going to win. She insisted that I should attend this event,” he said. The closeness between the father and daughter was evident, and upon enquiry, Lucas said he raised his daughter alone after her mother passed away when she was only five years old. He said that is why her winning a national pageant was so significant and emotional to him, as he has always tried to raise her with a winning and positive spirit.

He said his daughter would joke, saying she has a winner’s blood each time they talked about the pageant. “I am on ‘cloud nine’. This is exciting and I do not believe what I am seeing,” said the excited father. He said he would continue to support her in everything she sets her sights on, especially now that she is Miss Cultural Heritage for Swaziland. The queen herself said she joined the pageant for fun and of course to build her confidence. However, she admitted she was pleasantly surprised when her name was called, as the other girls were just as capable of taking the crown. She thanked everyone who supported her and also thanked her father for making it to the event.
