MBABANE – This year’s Eswatini Biggest Braai is not just about the meat, live music, records being broken, but the well-being of the elderly as well.

Over 12 health workers have volunteered their skills to nurturing the health of the elderly the day before Eswatini’s Biggest Braai 2018, which is set for July 22 at Mavuso Exhibition and Trade Centre in Manzini.

The health workers, who consist of doctors and nurses, will be engaged in a public health outreach which is being brought to the elderly by Philani Maswati. This outreach will provides preventative platform where the elderly will be doing medical checkups and there will be a platform where some ailments will be nursed. All these will be free of charge.

Philani Maswati Medical Advisor Dr Gcinile Buthelezi confirmed that over 12 health workers have committed themselves to this noble project ,which is set for July 21.

“We are on a mission of inviting  more public health workers, especially those from Manzini, and we are confident that they will be part of this project, adding more numbers to the 12 who have committed themselves already ,” said Buthelezi.

Buthelezi said this project was work in progress, which is proving to be a success. She invited the private sector health workers to also volunteer their expertise on the day.

Non-communicable illnesses like high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer will be strongly monitored and illustrious classes on them will also be held to educate family members on how to take care of the sickly at home.  “Already, we have support from the Swaziland Breast Cancer Network, a unit that will be educating about cancer, and providing check-ups too” she said. The Swaziland Breast Cancer Network’s Programme Manager, Lena Preko confirmed that her unit will be part of the outreach.

“We are happy to be engaged by Philani Maswati in the fight against cancer and making people aware of the illness,” said Preko.
This outreach will commence from 8am and the elderly are encouraged to come in their numbers for free health care.

The ages were, however, not specified but Philani Maswati’s Chairperson Lutfo Dlamini said anyone from the ages of 50 years and above was considered elderly, but they were hoping to assist those who were  financially incapable of accessing health care easily.
