Our personalities are really raising the bar high, leading by example on the importance of getting education to add value to your talent or art.

Miss Manzini team director plus model Winile Mavuso, takes GCWALA into her journey and on the importance of education, hence goes the saying ‘education is one of the powerful keys to success.’

Who is Winile and where is she from?
My name is Winile Mavuso. I am 21 years old. Born and bred in Manzini. I have three siblings. I’m the eldest child, raised by both parents and my grandmother. My mother and father are just the definition of hard work, they taught me to set goals and give everything to reach them.

What were you graduating for and how was your course?
I graduated at Limkokwing University with a Degree in Events Management. I really enjoyed my course and the end outcome as well.  I like knowing as much as I do about events. I’ve always been passionate about events management, which explains why I was elected as the director of entertainment during my time at Limkokwing University, luckily for me, after finishing Form V I had options and I picked Limkokwing University.  And I must say I don’t regret my choice.  The three years I spent there were the best years of my life.

In your learning process, what practical experience did you gain?
I was Limkokwing’s director of entertainment, so I was responsible for managing school events, artists and entertainers.  It was stressful and demanding but I learnt a lot from that experience. Also, as events management students, we were giving assignments to organise all kinds of events at school and outside school.  That helped prepare us for the industry.

Ever since you completed your last paper, have you seen any hope on employment in the country and if not, please elaborate?
Yes, there is hope for employment but the problem is companies are not willing to pay us.  Maybe it’s because we are young and we don’t have enough experience I don’t know. Another thing I’ve noticed is that companies don’t understand the concept of events management or the role we play at organisations. Probably that’s because it’s still a new course here in the country. Companies need to be educated about events management, including the public because when they hear the title, events management, they think of weddings, yet it’ more than that.  We have corporate events, social eve-nts, cultural events and personal events.  I want to focus more on corporate events after school because that is where the money is.

What are your thoughts on entrepreneurship to curb unemployment?
Entrepreneurship is the key to curbing youth unemployment. The youth has to start considering entrepreneurship as a career choice, due to the unemployment rate we have in the country, instead of looking or waiting to be absorbed into the already constricted job market that doesn’t want to pay us well.  Luckily for us Limkokwing students, we were groomed to be our own bosses. For example, as an events management student, I learnt about photography, business management, graphic design, marketing in the new economy and many more.

Where to from here?
Well, am still young so I am considering doing another degree in marketing. I want to have at least five degrees and I have also started my business.  I am running an online clothing shop on Instagram and Facebook. It’s called @scarlet_sage97. It’s still new but the support has been amazing.

Advice?
My advice to the other graduates is that, stop complaining about the current job opportunities and start creating your own job and be your own boss.  You don’t need a lot of capital to start a business.  You can start with what you have and multiply that onto something huge.
