MBABANE - “Eswatini is like home to me.” This was said by South Africa-born Tlale Makhene to this publication while confirming that he was coming to perform at the Swaziland Theatre Club, Jazz Gallery in Mbabane on Friday.

“As always, I am excited to be back in Eswatini and giving out my best as this is where I grew up, so the motivation behind my album ‘Swazi Gold’ last year,” said Makhene.

After serenading the crowd during the internationally renowned MTN BUSHFIRE 2018, the South Africa born drummer and jazz artist is coming to perform in the country in this year’s first event by Into Music Society.
The artist, who is well-known among die-hard jazz fans, last performed in the country in August 2018, where he performed for an intimate crowd at The Place in Manzini.

Performance

His invitation comes barely two months after the performance of South African jazz maestro Gabi Motuba, South Africa’s legendary trio Afro Tenors, South African mbaqanga duo Qadasi and Maqhinga and Yonela Mnana in the country.

Born in Soweto, South Africa, Makhene is one of South Africa’s sought after drummers, who moved to Eswatini at a young age and began drumming at the age of four. Highly regarded by musicians and musical fans, he is also a teacher, session musician and performer. His ‘The Ascension Of The Enlightened’ album is a true spiritual offering from a truly enlightened man. His passion for music began when he was young. He was influenced by his sangoma grandmother who often danced and ‘roll the bones’ to drumbeats.

Confirming his performance in the country was Into Music Society Founder Nelisa Lawton.
“We are very proud to be hosting him for his first performance in our new space, the Jazz Gallery. Born in Soweto and raised and educated from the age of four years in Eswatini, Tlale is tremendously proud of his Eswatini upbringing and celebrates it in his music,” said Lawton. Hosting such artists of high calibre is not new with Into Music Society.
They have hosted Argentina’s Juana and Ariel, South Africa’s Thandi Ntuli and recently the Afro Tenors, Yonela Mnana and many other artists.
