MBABANE –  Could the ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me?’ movie be Eswatini-born actor Richard E Grant’s big break?

Barely three weeks after the United Kingdom-based actor scooped a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor, he has been revealed as an Oscar nominee.

Grant revealed this on his social media pages on Tuesday, stating that he was nominated under the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for ‘Can You Ever Forgive Me’, a movie which has won him accolades including a New York Film Critics Circle Award.

Excellence

The internationally renowned Oscars, also known as the Academy Awards, are a set of 24 awards for artistic and technical merit in the film industry, given annually by the academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), to recognise excellence in cinematic achievements as assessed by the academy’s voting membership.

The various category winners are awarded a copy of a golden statuette, officially called the ‘Academy Award of Merit’, although more commonly referred to by its nickname ‘Oscar’.

This year’s Oscars are slated for February 29 at the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles in the United States of America. Such accolades are not new to the United Kingdom-based actor as in his acting career has five other awards. According to the New York Times, Grant was at one of his favourite restaurants in London, having dinner with his daughter, when suddenly, both burst into tears.

Grant expressed his belief, stating that he never imagined this nomination. “I am almost 62 years. I have never been nominated for the Oscars. So it is beyond anything I could even begin to imagine,” he told the New York Times.
