OOPS! NIGERIA MISSES DR SHAKES’ JOKE!
MBABANE - Misunderstood! While many find local comedian Dr Shakes’ jokes and memes hilarious, the Nigerian media took it literally.
Dr Shakes, real name Bonginkhosi Dlamini, made waves on a Nigerian online publication known as Legit.ng, popular as Naij.com, on Tuesday through his viral post with a placard written ‘Support Black Business’.
On the placard, the comedian was selling is seed and he had a price list of it. While many considered the post funny, the Nigerian media took it literally.
Their headline read “South African man who urged people to support black business sells his sperm for N78 300.”
Advertising
The article read that a photo of a man advertising his business on a placard on the road had gone viral on social media.
“The young man had taken to the street to advertise his sperm for R3 000 which is N78 300. Social media users were left confused after the photo was shared.
“The man is selling his sperm, with prices ranging from R500 (N13 050) to R3 000 (N78 300), depending on what the lady is looking for,” read the article.
The post was discovered by the Nigerian online media after the post was retweeted by South African comedian Taka Tina, who is now close friends with the local comedian. The post was retweeted on February 22 this year.
Legit.ng (Naij.com) is a Nigerian digital media and news platform. It is ranked as the seventh most visited website in Nigeria by Alexa. Legit.ng is the biggest publisher on Facebook by the audience in ‘Media’ category.
Dr Shakes told the publication he regardless of the misunderstanding, he was happy that his brand was being recognised in Nigeria.
“It is a norm to be misunderstood as a comedian and those are actually the perks of our industry.
“I just appreciate that my name is going international and this means the beginning of greater things to come,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of comedians, Smallz the Comedian said it is great news that Eswatini comedians are being recognised internationally.
Accurately
“It all starts when ones post goes viral, whether accurately or in a case where one is misunderstood, where an artist, especially us comedians, start gaining recognition.
“Most of us comedians have stories where we posted something and big names in the entertainment fraternity shared it, making us trend,” he said.
He said whether misunderstood or not, this was a big move for Dr Shakes’ brand.
Since last year, Dr Shakes’ memes and posts have been going viral, even among South African personalities. Recently, his post was shared by South African rapper Kwesta in his post which was captioned “To all the ladies who were all over @KwestaDaKAR, sorry he is now taken sekusele tsine now nema soprano (the only left is us with our soprano”).
His memes also landed him on SABC 1’s #ThrowBackThursday which airs on Thursday on 7.30pm and on SABC 3’s Trending SA.
