DOING CORPORATE WORLD JUST RIGHT

Bossing Up’ as a woman is no new topic, especially since women have found the courage to achieve their dreams in a world that was described as a ‘men’s world’.

Hlobisile Vilakati, like many other woman, is embracing the corporate world and slaying at it.
Hlobisile is the Communications Officer at The Ministry of Public Service.

STYLE took the opportunity to have a one on one with her to give that zeal to other women to do it better!
Hlobi walked us through a different type of slaying as she expressed how she believes women should try to look as natural as they can be in the work place. However, she highlighted that her belief is not the ‘RULE OF LAW’.

“I do not put my trust on make-up, I believe in being natural although it is not bad once in a while”, exclaimed Hlobisile.
With a Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication and a Diploma in Law from the University of Eswatini, one can say her intellectual capacity defies the patriarchal norm where women are mostly confined to household chores.

Her sense of fashion exudes elegance as she is always dressed in high heels.
Whoever said the devil wears Prada was making false claims because her persona is that of an angel as her soft toned voice creates a calm atmosphere.
“Wearing pumps to work is a no for me because of the way I see the corporate environment,” highlighted Hlobisile.

Although she has an alluring taste for heels she has no love for jewellery which contradicts the common saying that goes like ‘Diamonds are a girl’s best friend’.
“I am not into jewellery and nails because I tend to connect more to my natural self, not that it is not beautiful but at times, I tend to be more comfortable with a natural look,” she noted.

Every morning she makes sure she goes for a jog where she covers a kilometre and after wards she hits the shower then nibbles an energy bar just to get through the morning. Asked about how she manages her day she explained that she schedules all her meetings in her diary just to keep focus and that also helps her not to miss a thing.

“I note down all my plans for the day in my diary as it keeps me from not having a hectic day. I believe in diarising everything and it helps me maintain order,” she said.
Below is how she gets through the day.

Get a Head Start

I start by planning ahead. I typically plan on Saturday mornings. This allows me to have the rest of the weekend to spend with my family.
Most importantly, though, it allows me to have my plans ready for the start of the workweek.
Write Things Down

Outlining your issues, tasks, ideas, and projects on paper is going to assist you in sorting it all out. Create a list of all possible solutions to accomplish those things. Identify the steps you need to take to accomplish each task. Get those thoughts out of your head and onto paper.

Schedule Tasks First

If you take the time to accomplish your most critical tasks first, you will be able to complete those non-critical tasks with less pressure. You will then have additional time to complete those tasks that do not require top priority.

Turn Off Distractions.

Many times, we can become easily distracted by unimportant tasks and we lose time and focus. We must turn off distractions and start tracking our time.  For example, schedule tasks with specific times such as social media for 1 hour on Mondays and Wednesday, housework on Tuesdays for 1 hour and emails for 30 minutes daily.

Schedule Less

We can become overwhelmed, frustrated, and discouraged if we have too many things on our schedule.  You have to be realistic when it comes to your planning and what you schedule each day. You cannot have an appointment 12pm and then another at 1pm when it takes 45 minutes to get there or a phone conference at 9am and another at 10am when it’s going to take you some time to gather your information. Be reasonable with yourself, know your limits. Remember, it takes baby steps.

Take Breaks

This may be one of the most important tips. Remember that after 45 minutes, our ability to focus starts to taper off.  Take at least 10 to 15 minutes to stretch, get something to drink, take a quick walk; anything that can shift your focus for just a moment. Those 10 to15 minutes can bring about new ideas and you’ll be better prepared to continue your tasks.
