The dream of many fine artists is to make a living travelling to have their work on display for the world. Banele Khoza is currently enjoying this life with his paintings taking him to places as far as Paris in France.
Khoza is living his passion and dream of professional art. If he is not working on a new painting at his space, he is either part of an art exhibition or relaxing at his house in Pretoria.
Khoza (25) creates abstract paintings and installations.
He is also a talented Curator, Interior Designer and proud founder of BKhz Art Gallery based in Braamfontein.
The Hlatikhulu-born artist’s vast talent took centre stage when he stunningly designed the interior look for the TV show; ‘Win A Home’ on SABC 3 in 2017 (Viewer’s Choice Award Winner with Tshepo Sealetsa). Khoza is a visual artist whose love for bright colours, free –nicely decorated space, and upcoming artists has successfully intertwined to paint a distinctive and enchanting journey of the award-winning artist in the world of artworks.
From his stylish paintings of imaginative portraits, to his stunning designs at his art gallery, Khoza vividly displayed his love for art and this led to him scooping yet another award last week.
The Mail & Guardian celebrated his hard work and amazing artworks through their annual Top 200 Young and Exceptional South Africans list.
The deep-voiced and reserved artist says he was blown away by the incredible recognition and agrees with STYLE that is he definitely doing something special in his career to be recognised by the M&G.
how the interview unfolded;

What I know now…
What I do wish for people to know is that - it isn’t an easy journey - which most people would think it is. It is important to be fully committed to the journey of building an entity or a brand and always bring in your values in the construction phase. It is easy to be swayed by money and all of a sudden co-sign on brands or products that do not best represent you. I have chosen not to be involved in these and hope to not ever do so.

What the M&G award means…
The award and also the ones before it is that, my efforts and sacrifices are worthy.
In the past year that I have led the development of BKhz Art Gallery there has been a sense of imposter syndrome that followed me. After nearing six months each time, it would almost be like a crash. This was based on the fact that I expected an immediate win/success and also for it to be easy. Having being faced by the challenges of running a space and being the front face for it, has pulled me in all directions.
It hasn’t been easy, it has been life class. In the year I have had to also amend some of my comfortable traits that will hopefully lead me in a better direction and to new heights.

What not many know is…
My confidence also takes serious dips, where I feel I cannot do it any longer, often where I feel I am not good enough to lead the position. I have had to talk myself out of these intense emotions. I feel these conversations should be discussed with the wide public, especially to those who will be taking on entrepreneurship.
Your intention as an artist…
My intention as an artist is to communicate a message of liberation within finding who you think you are what you love and what you believe in. I find that knowing is expensive and we ought to want to know more as people.

Greatest advice…
Live below your means; my father Michael Khoza has been the greatest example of this notion.

Staying true to yourself…
I wish I knew earlier that all I had to be even in my exploration of the heights of the space was to remain myself. I did not have to imitate or try channelling other people’s energy. This is what makes the business authentic and also thrive.

Knowing your strengths…
I have also stopped seeking balance. The truth is, one will never feel well balanced not even on a healthy day.
Acceptance of this keeps you at ease with everything that decides to surface as a surprise.

Do things differently…
That has been the magic on my mind; look for the gap and tackle it to your best ability. Lastly, always follow your curiosity.
