MBABANE – Jazz music can also be sentimental while sending across a meaningful message.

This was proven by South Africa-born jazz artist, instrumentalist and composer Mandisi Dyantyis at the Jazz Gallery at Eswatini Theatre Club, Mbabane on Friday night. Dyantyis did this by storytelling while performing. With every song that he performed, he told a story which the intimate crowd could relate to. One of the most touching songs that he performed was ‘Kode Kube Nini’ (which can be loosely translated to meaning when will this situation last?). Dyantyis sang and even sat down on a chair, while evoking so much emotion. His performance lasted for close to a blissful two hours.

He brought with him a band and one of the spotted band members was South African renowned and well-educated bass guitarist Thembinkosi Mavimbela. Dyantyis was hosted by Into Music Society, a growing entity that hosts the crème de la crème of jazz artists musicians who perform live music. In a brief interview, Dyantyis said he was happy to perform in Eswatini.
“Most of the jazz artists at home speak of this place and I feel honoured that I can relate now,” he said. The artist came to perform his amazing album titled ‘Somandla’.

Throughout

Born and raised in Port Elizabeth, Dyantyis began playing the trumpet at the age of 8. He studied classical music throughout his schooling career (Pearson High School) and emerged from the University of Cape Town with a BMus Honours Degree in Jazz Studies in 2005 where he played in the UCT Big Band for most of his studies. He is a versatile musician who is also a composer, arranger and producer not only in jazz but western classical and African indigenous music as well. He has played with some of that country’s top musicians over the years. These are Jimmy Dludlu, The Abdullah Ibrahim Big Band, Robbie Jansen, Max Vidima, Moreira Chonguica just to name a few. He has produced, played and co-written on Nomfundo Xaluva’s multi-award winning albums KUSILE and From.Now.On. He currently holds the position of Music Director for theatre company Isango Ensemble, previously known as Portobello.
