Ngamla Fashions in the house!

For two consecutive years, he has been able to design top class prom night outfits for different schools in the capital city. And for the second time, pupils who wore his outfits have been able to scoop the Prom Queen and Prom King crowns. He is only 18 years old and his designing talent is amazing.

It is amazing such that he now has his own label, Ngamla Fashions.

His name is Mkhululi Dlamini, a former St Mark’s High School pupil, who completed last year and made up his mind about joining the designing industry. He says the passion for designing was aroused by his desire to express himself and make a mark.

"My first experiment started with one t-shirt which I made and it was perfect. After that, some people came to me and asked me about it. They liked it and wanted to know about the label. So I worked on it, which is why today we have Ngamla Fashions.," he tells Style.

He is aware of the fact that the word is normally used for people who are rich and mostly white but says he told himself that there’s no problem for a young man like him to use such a name.

"I don’t really regard it as meant for white filthy rich people. For me it’s an individual who knows what he or she wants in life. The word describes my life, I didn’t grow up in a rich family but this label gives me so much confidence that nothing can stop me, I’m the man."

The young man caught the attention of Style last week Friday during his former school’s prom night where he designed outfits for about 10 pupils who included the eventual winners of the Prom King and Prom Queen crowns.

"It was amazing and a bit challenging to design 10 outfits within a week. As an upcoming designer, one has make an impression so that the people will have confidence in you. together with my crew, we tried our best. When they won it felt good because it will encourage more people to support me and at the same time it encouraged me and my team to work even better."

He says there is no good moment in the industry than seeing an outfit complete and seeing the client smiling and excited with it. He says it’s even more great when that outfit is counted amongst the best in whatever occasion the client attends.

The bad side, he says, is when he can’t find material for an outfit, forcing him to cross the country and come back soon enough to have it started.

He says there are those materials, which are just hard to find even outside the country.

Despite the fact that his mother wants him to concentrate on school, the young man feels he is making big bucks in designing.

He says he has discovered that the industry has so much money and he wants to make as much money as possible.

He says he’s been charging the pupils between E500 and E1000 for the outfits.

"I had to understand the fact that I’m dealing with young people and their coffers are not that much good, so I had to make things affordable."

We end the interview with him telling Style that he has some creative minds, which he works with, and they are doing a great job.

"I am the CEO and founder, so I’ve brought in a General Manager by the name of Delisa Dlamini and Melusi Ncongwane, who is my Creative designer. Our next job is to design for Mater Dolorosa High School pupils, who are also going to have their prom nights so it’s business everyday for us," he said.
