TENDANESS SHARES MUSICAL JOURNEY ON BBC RADIO

MBABANE – Expanding his musical footprint across the globe, one radio station at a time.

Tendaness is a talented up-and-coming producer,  a renowned DJ and songwriter from Eswatini.
He appeared in an interview on BBC Africa’s ‘This Is Africa’ on Saturday evening and he said that he became determined to devote his life to music as a young child.

The show features the greatest artists from Africa and Tendaness is considered by the station as one of the greatest upcoming stars in the continent. His hit songs ‘Jika’ and ‘Love Me’ have been on the BBC playlist since 2017 with the former making it to number five on Destination Africa in that year.
When he was around eight years old, his uncle - who was a sound engineer in neighbouring South Africa - used to take him to lots of music gigs and introduce him to famous South African artists, including Brenda Fassie. He said it was DJ Oskido who gave him his first ever CD.

“Seeing all of that, seeing my uncle live that life inspired me to do it and become who I am today,” said Tendaness.

Production

He revealed that an important stage on his musical journey was a period he spent as a student in Oklahoma in the United States of America.
Tendaness was exposed to a lot of music, including electronic dance music. He also perfected his art.
He said he didn’t have a girlfriend at the time and he actually told himself that he wanted to work on his music and put in the hours as he wanted to master production since it was his passion.

“I often thought that look, let’s work man, let’s get to the 10 000 hours where we can, just master this production thing because I was so passionate about music because I did not have a girlfriend at the time,” he said. 

According to Tendaness, this all paid off as he has been one of the first artists from the country to get airplay on major South African channels with hits like Jika, which he made with his former guitar teacher Bholoja.

He said his self-titled album, Tendaness, was doing so well that, for him, the album reaching number one on Apple music was pretty good. “Just seeing the fruit of my labour has been very amazing. A couple of years ago people didn’t even know who I was and now they do and that has been very exciting,” he explained. 

The show has also hosted incredible African artists such as Mr Eazi and Sho Madjozi who won a BET award in the United States of America in 2019.
