MBABANE – There is nothing more exhilarating than people from two different cities coming together to share banter on social media.

Monday afternoon was no different as social media users from Mbabane and Manzini engaged in a ‘twar’, also known as a Twitter War, to show each other which city was more powerful.

Mbabane is the capital city of Eswatini with an estimated population of 94 874, it is in the Hhohho Region.
Meanwhile, Manzini is the country’s urban centre ahead of Mbabane with a population of over 110 000 and is known as ‘The Hub’ of Eswatini.

Trending

By the late afternoon the light banter had attracted a large number of social media users which led to the name Manzini trending for the remainder of the night.
There were no holds barred  throughout the entire time as jabs on the people of Mbabane being model C and English speakers compared to the Manzini people, who were regarded as street smart and hustlers.

In addition to that, some users shared that Mbabane had some of the most incredible high rise buildings compared to Manzini as well as that Manzini was the only town in the country that had named cities in one such as the Dubai Mall and Jo’burg City.

The mood was fun such that no one really took offence in all that was said through the tweets which is what attracted most people to wanting to participate.
Manzini is also known as the entertainment hub of the country because of the many events that are hosted at the Mavuso Exhibition and Trade Centre throughout the year.

Meanwhile, the capital city’s most famous hangout spot Solani’s Shisanyama comes second.
Speaking to one of the initiators of the ‘twar’ Ndvumiso Khumalo, who shared that the #ManziniVsMbabane trend, even though it seems divisive, was really not about dividing the two cities, but about uniting Twitter users from Eswatini through jokes, humour and banter.

The two cities being the most popular in Eswatini, and many users on Twitter either hailing or residing from the two cities (and their outskirts) made the trend more interesting, appealing to a wide audience and further going viral.

Inspiration

The inspiration was creating content for the Eswatini Twitter space and seeing local users interacting and having fun with something familiar to them, as opposed to emaSwati tweeps (users of the app) being interested and engaging mostly in South African content.
“We have our own issues to engage in, be it politically, socially or otherwise. I am happy that the Eswatini Government is also on Twitter because that makes the dissemination of information faster and effective.

“I advise corporate companies to also join Twitter to put themselves out there in the world, as Twitter users from Eswatini are growing in numbers and influence (especially the youth). Lastly, since the trend consisted mostly of jokes, humour and banter, it might have helped some local comedians and entertainers push their craft, including the new and unknown.

By the end of the day, Khumalo was hailed as one of the most influential local users of the app by fellow Eswatini users.
