MBABANE - New hit to jam to.

Renowned and legendary South African Jazz artist and co-founder of Kalawa Jazmee Don Laka has collaborated with Eswatini’s sensational and multi-talented artist/producer Flameboy Universe on a song called ‘Let me breathe’.

The song is found on Don Laka’s new album which was released on all online music stores last week, and is titled ‘Uno Mundo’.

Flameboy Universe could not hide his excitement as he described the collaboration as a dream come true, while narrating his new venture to the publication.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine myself working with the legendary Don Laka on a track. He is someone I grew up listening to and his discography and entire catalogue is every artist’s dream. I’m quite elated, humbled, and still speechless,” said the MTN SWAMA Award-winning artist, Flameboy Universe.

commemorative

‘Let me breathe’, according to Flameboy, is a commemorative record about the black killings and police brutality that is happening worldwide, particularly following the gruesome murder of George Flyod in the United States of America.  “It is a consciousness record that resonates with the black lives matter movement, but most importantly, that resonates with the sacredness of life itself,” said Flameboy.

Asked on how he got to collaborate with someone iconic as Don Laka, Flameboy revealed that fellow Eswatini hip hop artist Mazwe ‘Maz’ Mthethwa had been the plug.

“Maz told me about a project Don was working on, and he suggested that I pitch a verse, as he loved my flow. So I did exactly that, and when Don heard it he instantly gave me the nod. He actually kept his promise and invited me to work with him on the song,” said the jovial artist.

impeccable

Crowned as the best newcomer in the very first MTN SWAMA Awards in 2017, Flameboy described Don Laka’s work ethic as impeccable.

“I was literally freaked out in disbelief during the entire recording session. I mean, this was not just any legendary musician I was in studio with, it was The Don Laka! The Jazz maestro. You know Jazz music is all about perfection, so his work ethic was beyond reproach. I learnt a lot from him, and I hope to maintain the same level of discipline, focus, and etiquette going forward. The feeling was quite humbling,” he said.

Flameboy Universe’s collaboration with Don Laka comes on the heels of yet another ground-breaking cross-border collaboration between Eswatini’s Sands and Lesotho’s Tsepho Tshola, who collaborated on the song ‘Ngiyathandaza’ – which is the first single from Sands’ forthcoming album ‘Sands of Rhythm’.

The ‘Nowadays’ hit-maker said such collaborations should demonstrate to all local artists that nothing was impossible.

“Artists should try to avoid any negativity and lies that may discourage them, and I’m actually still to collaborate with as many local and international artists as possible,” said Flameboy Universe.

Meanwhile, the Eswatini Arts and Music Association (SWAMA) has congratulated Flameboy Universe for bagging what they termed as a dream collaboration. SWAMA Public Relations Officer Bongani DJ Tizalami Dube, said such collaborations were a big endorsement of Eswatini music’s growth, and were highly likely to put the local industry on the world map. He applauded Flameboy Universe for his tenacity and drive and said such focus was likely to pay off.
