MBABANE – Some people have great stories to tell about the year 2020 despite its challenges.

This also goes for Eswatini-born MTN Joyous Celebration star Londiwe Nxumalo’s talents which have been given a nod by winning the ‘Best Gospel Album’ at the South African Ukhonukamva Gospel Music Awards.

The awards were held over the past weekend in the Mpumalanga Province in the neighbouring country.

In her speech, Nxumalo thanked people for the love they gave her.

“Because of your love, because of your votes, I, Londiwe Sphe Nxumalo have received the first award ever for the project/album titled ‘Ngenzelw’isimanga’. We would not have made it without you,” she said.

Nxumalo could not be reached for comment by the time this report was being compiled.

Nxumalo joined the respected gospel music ensemble in 2017.

She also headlined one song in the new album titled MTN Joyous Celebrations 22 and she performed it with the crew for the first time in Eswatini at the Mavuso Trade Centre in Manzini.

Auditioning

In an elaborate interview with this publication a year ago, Nxumalo confirmed that she joined the gospel ensemble in 2017 after auditioning in Johannesburg.

“I went to the auditions with a broken ankle and I was made to audition first. On the same day at 4.30pm, I was called for round two and I was told I would receive a call if I made it through,” she said.

Weeks after the auditions, MTN Joyous Celebration pioneers, Pastor Jabu Hlongwane and Boniswa Ralaure revealed the news live at her workplace.

Professional

Nxumalo confessed that she did not have a professional music career; she only sang in churches and intimate events.

The only highlight in her music journey was being featured in South African gospel artist Mxolisi Mbethe’s CD in their song ‘Ho- sanna’.
