MBABANE – Local comedian Mduduzi Dlamini’s stardom has been on the rise ever since he started his journey in the arts.

The comedian shared that he has been nominated as a finalist under the ‘Top Comedian, Rest of Africa’ catagory per the South African Comedy Awards’ judges.

Speaking to the Entertainment Desk, Dlamini said he was nominated alongside other comedians from Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia as well as Kenya.

Mdura, as he is popularly known, was a multi-award nominee under the National Arts and Culture Awards (NACA) in 2015, consecutive nominations in 2017 and 2018 for the Comics Choice Awards in South Africa.

He is also the only local comedian to bag the MTN SWAMA ‘Best Comedian’ award in 2018 and 2020.

The comedian said such news came at a time when the arts sector faced the worst shut down ever caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I did not do much of what I had planned for the year in my career and as such the nomination is a huge boost to my confidence in terms of my work,” he said.

Mdura shared that he was astounded, when the Project Manager of the awards sent him an email to alert him about the nomination.

“I could not believe it such that it took me a while to eventually acknowledged it,” said Mdura. Earlier in the year the comedian shared that he would be part of the panel of judges for the awards, especially for the categories he was not nominated under.

The South African Comedy Awards were first held in 2006 at Cape Town’s Artsscape Centre and saw world renowned comedians such as Trevor Noah and Loyiso Gola, together with established comedians like Riaad Moosa and John Vlismas.

SWAMA through their Public Relations Officer Bongani ‘Tizalami’ Dube shared that the association was extremely proud of the various local artists, who were making waves internationally and regionally, as they are Eswatini’s immediate ambassadors of excellence in the arts.

“We laud artists, who have ridden the digital wave, especially during this time, and made an impact beyond our borders.

As we always say, the world is, and shall continue to be, our stage. Let more locals own it,” said Dube.

The SACA’s live ceremony will be held on December 12 at Soweto Theatre and an online broadcast will subsequently follow on December 16 on social media pages of the awards.

Meanwhile, the comedian also urged his local supports to vote for him on the event’s website through sacomedyawards.com.
