MBABANE - The grass isn’t always greener on the other side but for Smallz The Comedian, his move to South Africa is evidently paying out.

Real name Lungelo Gina, he is one of the most followed comedians on social media with a following of over 580 000 on Facebook and over 56 000 subscribers on YouTube, which is where most of his comedy content is streamed. He recently had an agreement to be managed in that country by STQ Media; one of South Africa’s best talent management agencies based in Johannesburg.

Since his move two weeks ago, Smallz has been working with South African renowned comedians on various projects including  Chik Aljoy (Zimbabwe), Mjekejeke Umlungu (SA), Khanyisa Bunu (SA) and Long John (Zimbabwe) to name a few. Asked on how he felt about the move, he said: “I’m settling well in SA despite the ongoing daily challenges I am managing.

Chance

“I have got a chance to work with a number of top comedians in SA which has given me much exposure and has been a great leaning point for new things and development of my craft. I want to personally thank STQ media for giving me such a chance and exposing me to endless possibilities which I continue to realise as I move along the streets in SA. He further added by saying ‘The Couples Comedy Show’ remained a concept by him and other comedians as they collectively came up with the concept to shoot the series.

“This will be a series that will continue to be shows on our social media platforms especially Facebook and YouTube. We, however, wish to take it further and show it on TV and we hope when the time is right, it shall be on our screens.” he said. The comedian also revealed that he had been receiving bookings for performances where he would go solo and at times collaborate with other comedians.

He has recently been booked over the past weekend where he was the Master of Ceremonies (MC) for Lindo Vilakazi’s single launch. He was also to headline for the ‘Atmosphere of Glory’ which was hosted by Nduduzo Matse and Smallz was MC alongside Gedlembane. His local manager, Nhlanhla Ngwenya also disclosed that the comedian was also doing tours and interviews with radio stations in Mpumalanga including Lokuhle FM.

Recording

Smallz is also in the studio recording a number of comedy series which are due to be released soon in episodes. Some of them have already been released to his page Smallz The comedian on Facebook Page as well as on YouTube. Smallz temporary migration to SA depicts SA born Trevor Noah as he is now one of the world’s renowned celebrities. In 2011, he relocated to the United States (US). In January 2012, Noah became the first South African stand-up comedian to appear on The Tonight Show; and in May 2013, he became the first to appear on Late Show with David Letterman.

Noah was the subject of the 2012 documentary You Laugh But It’s True and in the same year, he starred in the one-man comedy show Trevor Noah: The Racist, which was based on his similarly titled South African special That’s Racist. In March 2015, Comedy Central announced that Noah would succeed Jon Stewart as host of The Daily Show; his tenure began on 28 September 28, 2015, and he continues to fly the South African flag high with his comedy on and off the screens.
