MBABANE – Legendary Kwaito group Trompies is set to perform in Eswatini during the Easter weekend at Ekhayeni Chillaz in Matsapha.

The event is slated for April 17, 2022, and will also feature local DJs and artists who are still to be confirmed fully. In an interview with Ekhayeni Chillaz Event Organiser, Menzi Magagula, he said they were pleased to announce that the South African Kwaito group had confirmed their booking and were excited to be returning to the kingdom, as this wouldn’t be their first time in the country. Trompies performed at the last in-person MTN BUSHFIRE Festival and were a marvel to watch, so we wait in anticipation for their set at Ekhayeni. The event will cater for the youth and older crowd alike, as Magagula said: “We are aiming to start early and have our local acts perform throughout the day for a proper build-up for our headliners. Furthermore, we want to book artists who are in the same or similar genre as our main acts to set the tone for the day,” he added.

This event will not have pre-sold tickets, as payments will be made at the gate and entry into the venue will cost patrons E150. Confirmed DJs for the event so far are SUPA CDQ, Matamza and the MC of the show will be local veteran Anakhondza. “We have not decided on a VIP section yet, but we have received requests and are at a deliberation stage. There is also a surprise DJ we will have on the day, apart from our headline acts.

The ‘Fohloza’ hitmakers are an all-star group and were at the helm of the South African (SA) music industry in the 90’s. Kwaito is a proudly SA genre and groups like Trompies and Mashamplane, among others, are pioneers of same. This will be an equally great experience for the youth, who will get to witness living legends of Kwaito and it will be a reminiscent day for the older crowd, who will be having flashbacks when the originators of ‘pantsula’ culture take to the stage.

Trompies are well-known for their dance moves and vintage sound, which will be in full effect on the day. It is worth noting that, Trompies lost a member of their team in Emmanuel ‘Mjokes’ Matsane last year. Matsane was a humble and respected figure, especially in Kwaito circles and had been in the music industry for over two decades and performed various genres of music including Afro-pop and House. Patrons will, however, be pleased to see Jairus Jakarumba, Eugene Mthethwa, Mandla Spikiri and Mahoota on the same stage to perform songs a lot of them grew up on. For youngsters, this will be a history lesson in ‘pantsula’ culture, way before the skrr skrr era (LOL). This one will be one for the books.
