MBABANE - A chance of a lifetime for local film industry.

Local film-makers, producers and actors have been given the platform to be part of one of the best movie production companies in the world. Blumhouse Productions is an American film and television production company founded in 2000 by Jason Blum. It is known mainly for producing horror films, such as Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge, Split, Get Out, Happy Death Day, Halloween, Us, The Invisible Man, Freaky and The Black Phone. The production company has kept up a great reputation of leading summer internship programmes to groom creatives in the film industry. It is worth mentioning that the company has never opened up its doors to Africa before, but has had reputable African actors like Lupita Nyongo work in their projects. The production company announced that their internship programme starting in February will be extended to English speaking, African countries.

Motivated

“We are seeking motivated interns that possess great work ethic and a critical eye for story. Besides coverage, attending screenings and helping on pitch projects, interns have the opportunity to interact with all departments from post, production, casting, finance, marketing and legal. Students must be in Los Angeles. Unpaid and must receive school credit. Deadline to apply is February 16 2023,” read part of the press statement. More information can be seen on the company’s website, www.blumhouse.com. News of this opportunity was well received by local artists who were eager to shoot their shot. Actor and former Gomora actor, Sithembiso Kunene mentioned how the opportunities were growing and it was time for emaSwati to take up space in the world.

It is also worth mentioning that there has always been a cry from the local film and production industry to get more aid as it was lacking, fortunately an inbound association was formed. Eswatini Independent Film and Television Producers (EIFTPA) is an organisation that was created by local independent producers who create local content. This internship programme will serve as partial aid to this long cry. The association is the mother body of all film and television productions in the country and home to over 30 production houses and also affiliated to the Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture (ENCAC). The ENCAC office expressed great excitement and honour for being recognised by international resources to empower and grow local artists.
