MBABANE - ACAESWA President Phetsile Masilela has stepped down as head of the association.

The news of   the  Association of Christian Artists in Eswatini(ACAESWA) leader’s resignation came in a press statement. It was stated that when Masilela was re-elected as president during an Annual General Meeting (AGM), she mentioned that she had more responsibilities at work and elsewhere and did not think she would be in a position to discharge her duties well as president. She did not elude these facts. “She was persuaded by the AGM to earnestly consider taking up the presidency and delegate most of her duties to her vice president. She obliged and tried the AGM’s recommendations up to now. However, due to further additional responsibilities, she has found herself with no option but to resign as president of ACAESWA,” said Mtetwa Qwabe, Board Chair Secretary of ACAESWA.

It is worth noting that history was made on August 4, 2019, as the Gospel artist was elected as the first female president of the association. Since its inception over 20 years ago, the association had eight presidents including Sikelela Qwabe, Dumisani Manana, Ntsika Fakudze, Nathi Dlamini, Mhlonishwa Motsa, Zakhele Ginindza, Mzwakhe Myeni and the association’s convener, Mathokoza Mtetwa.

Decision

The decision was made by members of the association at their AGM held at Caritas conference room in Manzini. Masilela and the rest of the executive council were in office for three years before she was re-elected. Mxolisi Vilakati was chosen as Vice –President while Nhlanhla Mathunjwa and Brian Shabangu were elected as PRO and Recording Secretary, in that order. When reached for comment, Masilela sincerely apologised to all the members of the association and the Gospel lovers. “My resignation as president is sincerely out of love for the members of the association so that things ‘don’t die in my hands’ while I’m busy with other assignments that need my undivided attention. I have taken time to pray about this. I know and I’m confident that God is with us. He loves us and He will do everything for His own glory.

“Over the four years we have achieved so much. This includes the rebranding of the association; 2019 Lockdown Gospel Music Awards; back to school shoe campaign for 100 needy children; contributions to the Intellectual Property regulations implementation and setting up of the board; 2022 Gospel Music Awards; and many more,” explained Masilela in a long and heartfelt statement. The now former president mentioned that she appreciated the opportunity that was awarded to her, especially the chance to explore her leadership skills. Lastly, she assured that she was still a member of the association, “I will advise and support where I can,” she said.
