UNESWA FM GIG NOW OPEN TO PUBLIC
MBABANE – The University of Eswatini (UNESWA) radio station, known as UNESWA FM, has invited the public for auditions for a slot on the campus radio.
It’s worth noting that before only ‘Journalism students were the ones operating the radio station, but with time, the campus radio accommodated other students. Currently, the radio station is conducting auditions to give the local community a chance to get behind the microphone and discover their talent while also working hand in hand with the radio station.
Auditions
The auditions aim to find presenters, news readers as well as programme producers for the radio station. At the moment, the radio station boasts programmes such as ‘Campus Speak’, which addresses issues surrounding students while at the university. ‘Tematekelo’, is another programme that aims to educate while entertaining listeners about issues that surrounds the institution. They also have ‘Youth Corner’ a programme that focuses on the youth in terms of how they can acquire and penetrate certain opportunities to better their lives. It was officially launched at the Kwaluseni Campus on March 31, 2021 as ‘UNESWA Radio American voices project’, and uses the frequency 88.2, hence it is known as ‘UNESWA FM 88.2’. The radio station broadcasts on weekends and during the week, listeners can get a repeat of the weekend programmes as well as good music.
Launch
The guest speaker during the launch was United States Ambassodor to the Kingdom of Eswatini Jeanne Maloney. The day began with a tour of the UNESWA radio station by the ambassador, Vice Chancellor, Professor Justice Thwala, Director of Media Development, Phesheya Dube, other dignitaries and UNESWA management. Thwala in his statement during the launch said: “The expected outcome of the project was the strengthening of the programme production and critical thinking skills of students within the department of Journalism and Mass Communication. As an institution we owe our gratitude to the US Embassy’s Public Affairs Section, which has enabled us to be the beneficiaries of funding to implement the project.” Most importantly, they have news bulleting which airs in the morning at 6am up to 10pm as well as in the evenings at 6pm up to 8pm. The current station supervisor Mndeni ‘The Magician’ Mavuso says their will to develop the lives of others as a community radio station grows with them.
