EZULWINI - ‘Ngafa’ hitmaker Shwi on Friday evening gave this publication an exclusive interview about his life and absence from the spotlight.

Formerly known as Shwi Nomtekhala, the South African Maskandi duo split, but Shwi kept his love for music. This past weekend he performed at the Makoti Festival, which was held at  Malkerns Country Club. The Maskandi duo was formed back in 1990’s.Some of their famous songs include ‘Ngafa’ which was their biggest selling record back in 2019, including; Wangisiza baba, Sponono sami and Uthando.

Platforms

On Friday evening Makoti Festival team hosted a welcoming dinner which was held at the Happy Valley Hotel. The question posed was; “When I was growing up, I used to listen to your music through my parents playing it all the time, but decades later, when I was old enough to access music platforms, you were not around.” The artist responded and said that people should understand that life works like the world we live in and that it has seasons, in summary there is a season for everything.

Season

“Life works with season as there is summer, autumn, and right now we are going into winter. So different season need different reasoning and one may think that I was away, but I was available but the season required me to have a different kind of reasoning,” answered Shwi. The attendees were quite moved by the answer that the artist gave. It is worth noting that the artist going solo was announced mid last year. In another article published by the Daily Sun on July 19, 2022 the South African print media publication wrote an article titled; “Legendary Maskandi artist and hitmaker Shwi has gone solo and rebranded as Shwi Mantombazane.” The article read: He was always known as the one half of the Maskandi band Shwi Nomtekhala. Together they blazed a trail through SA, and fans fell in love.

Break-up

The duo had a messy break up that involved lawyers and they ultimately went their separate ways. The Maskandi artist  is now ready for his solo career. He hasn’t lost his fan base and is grateful that they still love him, as he took time to introspect before coming back into the music industry. He has rebranded and goes by Shwi Mantombazane. Under his new moniker, the veteran artist is falling in love with the process of making music again. The sound he’s been working on is about the love of making music.  “It takes time to make music that people will love and appreciate, especially in our genre because you start with the writing, rehearsing with your guitar, and then recording in studio. Then you come back to do the backing vocals and the editing, it is a beautiful process that I enjoy,” he shared. It is worth noting that the above quote by Shwi was with the SA media publication, Daily Sun.
