TAMMY CALLS FOR MORE FEMALE ARTISTS

Mbabane – Taking inspiration from the Epic Gig’s complete line-up, Tammy ‘Toxik’ Dlamini is encouraging more female artists to take the lead and fill in the gap that exists in the industry.

Looking at the overall line-up of the much anticipated Epic Gig, one would notice that there are more male acts set to perform in the three-day festival than female artists. This has prompted the festival’s director, Tammy Dlamini, to call for more female artists to join the music industry and take the lead.

Speaking to this publication, the festival director mentioned that they had noticed that when they sent out a callout for Freshman acts, the turnout was more males, which was an indication that there is a gap for female acts in the industry. “I do not know if it is because of shyness, but females need to do away with the perception that they are usually backing up male lead performers at most times and just come forward, take the lead themselves, and fill the gap in the music industry,” he said.

In his bid to encourage more female performers, Dlamini mentioned that, as a festival, they wished to see more female artists fill the Freshman stage at the next festival. He went on to say that the genres that seemed to have a lack of female artists were; Hip Hop and Rnb, “There seems to be a lack of female performers in Hip Hop and RnB and they must fill this gap because I believe they can succeed,” he said. Among the total of 33 local artists who will perform at the festival slated for June 30–July 02 at Mavuso Trade and Exhibition Centre, female acts who appear in the line-up include; Itsallblaq, Miss Tee, Chantel, and DJ Expo, just to mention a few.
