23 SCHOOLS FOR CHORAL MUSIC COMPETITION

MBABANE –  The anticipation is palpable as 23 schools from the four regions of Eswatini gear up for the highly anticipated Eswatini Schools Choral Music Competition 2024.
Scheduled to take place from June 19 to June 22, this annual event promises to showcase the immense talent and passion of young voices from across the country.

Sponsored by EswatiniBank, the Eswatini Choral Competition has become a celebrated tradition, captivating audiences with its enchanting melodies and captivating performances.
The journey began on June 8 with the solo eliminations held at the Divine Healing Ministries in Manzini.

Elementary

Soloists, who secured the top four positions in the elementary and intermediate categories will grace the stage once again on June 28 in the same venue.  Additionally, soloists who advanced to the Champ of Champs round will join the orchestra on June 30 for a truly breathtaking performance. Jockonias Madlazi, the Secretary of the Eswatini Schools Choral Music Association, confirmed the participation of 23 schools this year. The Hhohho Region boasts four high schools, while the Lubombo Region is represented by four schools.
The Shiselweni Region and Manzini Region have two and seven schools respectively.  Furthermore, primary schools from all corners of the country will also be competing, adding a touch of youthful exuberance to the event.

Competition

The larger groups’ competition will kick off in the Lubombo Region on June 19 at the prestigious Siteki Town Council Hall. Among the schools expected to perform on this day are Mpaka High School and Good Shepherd High School in the elementary and intermediate categories, respectively. On June 20, Pigg’s Peak at Gobolondlo Hall will come alive with the enchanting sounds of schools from the Hhohho Region. Hermann Gmeiner (SOS) High School, Nyakatfo High School, and many others will captivate the audience with their remarkable performances.  The intermediate category will see schools such as Mater Dolorosa High School, St Mary’s High, and Mhlatane High School showcasing their musical prowess.

Moving to the Shiselweni Region, KaMjuda will host an array of talented performers on June 21. Nsongweni High School and Nhlangano Central High School, among others, will take the stage under the intermediate category, leaving the audience in awe of their harmonious voices.  Finally, on the last day of the competition, June 22, Divine Healing Ministries in the Manzini Region will witness captivating performances from schools such as Sidlangatsini High School, Manzini Central High School, and Masundvwini High School in the elementary category. The day will be a celebration of talent and unity as these young voices come together in perfect harmony.

Awareness

In a conversation with Sithembiso Dlamini, the Chairperson of the Eswatini Schools Choral Music Association, the theme for some prescribed songs was revealed.  He mentioned that the female voice songs for high schools were composed to raise awareness about gender-based violence, a major challenge in our society today. By using their voices as a powerful tool, these young performers hope to inspire change and foster a society free from violence and inequality.
