MALKERNS - As we sat down for an interview with South African singer and songwriter, Simphiwe Dana, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and anticipation.

With her reputation for creative social commentary and activism through music, we knew that our conversation would be nothing short of enlightening. Simphiwe Dana, known for her work in the Xhosa language, had just finished a captivating performance on the main stage at the House on Fire in Malkerns, marking the first day of the Standard Bank Luju Food and Lifestyle Festival. The energy from her performance still lingered in the air as we settled in for our interview.

As we delved into her roots, Simphiwe spoke passionately about her Swati heritage, expressing how deeply connected she felt to the crowd during her performance. She shared her belief that it was her Swati ancestors guiding her to that very venue, creating an atmosphere that felt like home. Reflecting on her early career, the artist recounted signing a record deal with Gallo Records and releasing her debut album ‘Zandisile’ in 2004.
