EZULWINI - Movie Zone Cinema in Ezulwini recorded a full house during the opening of the new local film, Baka Ngwane.
In a dazzling display of national pride and cinematic enthusiasm, Eswatini’s film scene witnessed a remarkable event on Friday night as the much-anticipated local film Baka Ngwane made its debut across the country’s two cinemas: Julio’s Cinelux and Movie Zone. The Movie Zone cinema was especially abuzz during the 17:45 screening, with two rooms running concurrently to accommodate the eager crowds. The energy was palpable as emaSwati flocked in their numbers to support the film, turning what was initially a single-slot screening into a testament to the nation’s appetite for homegrown cinema.

After the film, the cast mingled with fans, delighting in the opportunity to pose for photos and share their thoughts. Ayanda Nkambule, who is also part of the local arts industry, praised the film’s production values, particularly highlighting the sound quality. Nkambule was moved by the film’s portrayal of historical figures, notably King Matalatala’s vulnerability. “It’s rare to see such raw emotion from historical depictions,” she remarked. “The film eloquently captures that even men of bygone eras were not immune to their feelings.” Mgidvowemakhosi Ndzimandze also expressed enthusiasm for the film, praising its exceptional quality and local production standards.

However, he admitted to a hint of disappointment with the ending, though he was relieved by the promise of a series continuation. “It’s thrilling to see such top-tier work emerging from Eswatini,” he noted. “The ending left me wanting more, but thankfully, a sequel seems imminent.” The film’s Executive Producer, Senator Pholile Shakantu, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming turnout. “We are deeply appreciative of the support from the nation,” she said. “The unexpected demand led us to open additional slots, a testament to the film’s resonance with our audience.”

Unexpected

Shakantu hinted at the future of the franchise, acknowledging the enthusiastic response to the film’s conclusion. “The feedback has been immensely positive, and we are already working on the next installment,” she revealed. “The film’s end includes a preview for what’s to come, and we assure emaSwati that the continuation is on its way.” While details about the release date of the next part remain under wraps, Shakantu emphasised that the future of the series would hinge on continued public support. “We invite everyone to continue supporting our local talent and the project as a whole,” she urged.

Portrayal

“Our goal is to elevate Eswatini’s film industry to a global platform.” A highlight of the night was Mandisa Mamba’s portrayal of King Matalatala’s queen, which left audiences spellbound and showcased the talent of local actors who had previously not acted professionally. “This project is a vital step in promoting local talent and aiming for international recognition,” Shakantu concluded, highlighting the film’s role in fostering the growth of Eswatini’s entertainment industry.
