PAGEANTS DIRECTOR WARNS AGENCIES ON LAWS
MBABANE - The Pageants Eswatini Director, Tony Dlamini, has issued a warning to people who host modelling events and pageants in the country without following proper procedure. This comes after this publication published a story on the hosting of Miss Culture International, which will be hosted in the country next year on April 26, 2025.
Dlamini said everyone who would want to host such events has to follow the proper procedures, as there is a body that governs pageants in the country. ‘‘We would like to warn individuals, companies, schools and any other organisations to follow the laws, rules and policies of the country on issues of pageants and models,” he said. The procedure includes registering under the Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture as the first step.
This has been set to help protect the integrity of pageants, while also offering help where needed. Eswatini Creativity Platform Director Nerville Johnson, who was going to be part of the upcoming Miss Culture International, said he did not do anything wrong and maintains that the Miss Culture International 2025 crowning will be hosted in the country. “I long approached the Pageants Eswatini to be a part of them, but it seems that they have other ulterior motives when it comes to my organisation. Joining the association proved to be helpless to me, as they are not interested in helping us grow, but they want to break us and they once told me to shut down my company,” he said.
In the letter that he received from the pageants director, Johnson points out a quote where he is told to refrain from hosting the Miss Culture International pageant, as they will not be allowed into the country with their criminal records and the practices that are misleading the nation. “All of these things are being made up just to make sure that my organisation crumbles. If all these are true they should bring forth all the evidence of all these allegations.
Creativity platforms has been helping a number of artists in the country and shutting my company down would ruin a lot of lives,” he said. It is worth noting that Johnson did not substantiate his claims that the organisation, Pageants Eswatini had ulterior motives against his company. Also in the letter that was sent to Johnson by the organisation, there is a part where it is claimed that the Miss Culture International team had members with criminal records, no evidence of this was produced. In the United States, there is no single governing body that oversees all beauty pageants. However, several prominent organisations, such as the Miss America Organisation and the Miss USA Organisation, set specific guidelines and standards for their respective pageants.
Petitions
These organisations require local and state pageants to be registered and comply with their regulations to qualify for national competitions. While it is not illegal to host a pageant without affiliation, those not registered with these established bodies may find it challenging to gain recognition and legitimacy within the competitive beauty pageant community.
