BABES WODUMO ALLEGEDLY ATTACKED

MBABANE – South African musician Babes Wodumo says she was allegedly attacked on Saturday evening while performing at Ehawini Lifestyle.

According to her, she was not only attacked at Ehawini Lifestyle, but she was further attacked at The George Hotel alongside her team members, who were also allegedly beaten by angry promoters. This was said by Babes Wodumo yesterday morning during a call she made to this publication.  The musician was allegedly attacked by angry promoters, who expected her to perform at Mdzimba View Shisanyama on Friday night.

Due to her failure to show up at Mdzimba View Shisanyama, she was then allegedly attacked.“I did not like what happened during my visit at Ehawini Lifestyle as well as in Eswatini.
“When I was performing at Ehawini Lifestlye, people whom I do not know disrupted my performance and further attacked me and my team. I fled to my car and tried to take a nap, but they continuously insulted me and my team members, who were further beaten,” she said.

Booked

The musician also added that the commotion did not end at Ehawini Lifestyle, but it continued to The George Hotel, where she had booked a room for the night. “When my team and I arrived at The George Hotel, the angry promoters also landed, and guns were drawn because it was like they wanted to prove to me that they are gangsters.  “I also know gangsters, but I wouldn’t want to show that off. I did not like the way I was treated,” she said.When asked if she will be pressing charges on the alleged promoters who attacked her, she cited that she doesn’t want to cause problems for them.

“I did think about pressing charges, but I came to think of the fact that they have children, and if I press charges, I may cause problems for them, as they are breadwinners in their families.
“I also did not want to tarnish my name and my brand, hence I went to my hotel room and slept,” she said. Ehawini Lifestyle Manager Bongani Ngwenya confirmed that angry event promoters attacked Babes Wodumo on Saturday night.“The promoters were demanding their money back, the money that they paid as a booking fee. Police had to intervene, and when they came, the promoters apologised for attacking her. Both parties agreed they would not press charges, and the situation was calmed.

“I was happy that the police did mention that the promoters had no right to attack Babes Wodumo because Babes Wodumo Entertainment is a company, if they had queries, they should sue the company instead of attacking the musician,” he said.  Big G Entertainment’s Mangena Ginindza was also contacted by this publication after Babes Wodumo allegedly implicated him to be behind the promoters who attacked her. Ginindza dismissed the allegations, citing that he was not part of the people who attacked the musician, he only went to The George Hotel to restore peace on behalf of Babes Wodumo.“I drove all the way from Pigg’s Peak on Saturday night to help Babes Wodumo.  “I am not part of the people who attacked her, and I had sent her a message to tell her not to come to Ehawini Lifestyle on my behalf, as I had already served her with a letter of demand, telling her that I am continuing to pursue our issue in legal ways,” Ginindza said.

Bouncer

He further alleged that Babes Wodumo was accompanied by a police officer based at Mafutseni, who was Babes Wodumo’s bouncer, and the police officer is the one who drew a gun during the commotion at The George Hotel. “When I arrived at The George Hotel, Babes Wodumo and her team were also arriving, alongside the people who they were fighting with at Ehawini Lifestyle. “There was noise, and insults were also exchanged between Babes Wodumo’s team members and the people they were fighting with at Ehawini.

“I called the police with the George Hotel security personnel. One of the people took out his gun, and while bridging the gun, it fell down. “He tried to pick it up and I told him not to do what he was intending to do with it. I noticed the gun belonged to the government because of the bud that had fallen from it. I was told he is a police officer from Mafutseni who was also a bouncer for Babes Wodumo on the day,” he said. It is worth noting that was Ginindza alleged about the firearm and the occupation of Babes Wodumo’s occupation is an allegation that was not substantiated or confirmed.Worth mentioning, Ginindza is the one who booked Babes Wodumo to perform at Pigg’s Peak Killarney Sports Ground on August 31. He has now issued a letter of demand, seeking E115 000 in damages. This comes after Babes Wodumo arrived late, causing significant disruption to the event. As a result, many patrons left, and the venue’s sound system was damaged.

Perform

To make amends, Babes Wodumo agreed to perform at Mdzimba View Shisanyama on October 25, 2024. Unfortunately, she failed to show up again, further infuriating the promoter.
Ginindza further revealed he is yet to draft another letter of demand to Babes Wodumo for failing to show up at Mdzimba View Shisanyama last Friday.Bongekile Mildred Simelane, prominently known as Babes Wodumo, is a South African singer, songwriter and choreographer. She rose to fame following the release of her debut album Gqom Queen, Vol. 1 and subsequently being nominated at the MTV Europe Music Award for Best African Act. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati said they do not have records of this incident yet. However, it is worth noting that when police officers are called to the scene when patrolling, they restore peace and no records might be kept for that particular incident.
