CULTURAL SCENE TO BE ELEVATED
MBABANE – In a significant development, the Theatre Club and the United States Embassy in Eswatini have collaborated to introduce a new era for the esteemed cultural institution. Theatre Club Vice Chairperson, Sizo Hlophe, spoke to our publication about the partnership and the opportunities it presents. “We are greatly enthused about this new partnership and on January 18, we will be hosting a series of documentary screenings at the Theatre Club. Individuals with an interest in becoming members of the club are more than welcome to join us, as the membership details will be available at the venue on the day of the screenings,” he said.
Series
The documentary series, which will run from January 18 to February 8, aims to inspire artists and foster a deeper understanding of their work. “This initiative will not only provide artists with valuable insights, but also enable them to connect with like-minded individuals within the Eswatini arts community,” Hlophe noted. The documentary screenings will kick-start on January 18 with ‘Master of Light’ and will be followed by ‘Finding Her Beat’ on January 25. Subsequent screenings will include ‘A Choice of Weapons’ on February 1, while the final documentary, ‘The Rebellious Life of Mrs Rosa Parks’, will be screened on February 8. It is worth mentioning that this new partnership follows the introduction of a new committee at the Theatre Club. Led by Chairperson Phila Dlamini, who brings a wealth of experience and passion for the arts, the committee also comprises Vice Chairperson Sizo Hlophe, Treasurer Khulekani Msweli, Vice Treasurer Dzelisile Mdluli Lekgowe, Secretary Maswati Dludlu and three committee members: Thembinkosi Mthethwa, Siya Dlamini and Velemseni Ndzimandze. The committee’s primary objective is to enhance the Theatre Club’s presence and create a thriving community for artists in Eswatini. The new committee was elected at an extraordinary Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Theatre Club in Mbabane August 28 last year.
The Theatre Club, which was established in 1983, has been a cornerstone of cultural expression in Eswatini for decades. The venue has been a platform for numerous notable Eswatini artists and has earned its status as a national treasure. The new committee will play a pivotal role in steering the club towards a new trajectory and ensuring that its rich heritage continues to thrive. As a testament to the club’s enduring influence, some of Eswatini’s most prominent artists have showcased their talents on its stages. With the introduction of this new partnership and committee, the Theatre Club is poised to embark on an exciting new journey, solidifying its position as a hub for artistic expression and a beacon for Eswatini’s vibrant cultural scene.
