MBABANE – Sihle Gumbi has announced that the association has excelled over the past year and is determined to maintain that momentum. The president of the Eswatini National Choral Music Association said this in an exclusive interview with the publication. “Last year was a remarkable year for the Choral music fraternity,” he said, reflecting on the notable growth in competitions.A significant highlight was the introduction of a new international competition, the Tiro Mpane NCE Choral Eisteddfod. “This was fantastic news for our community as it allowed several choirs to compete in South Africa, where they performed exceptionally well,” he said. Four local choirs proudly represented Eswatini during the Tiro Mpane Choral competition. These included the Emmanuel Methodist Choir, the Mbabane Methodist Choir, His Majesty’s Correctional Services Choir and the Royal Eswatini Police Service Choir.

Consistently

These ensembles have consistently demonstrated the exceptional talent and passion of the people of Eswatini. The choirs truly elevated the nation’s profile, with the Royal Eswatini Police Services Choir securing second place in the large category, while His Majesty’s Correctional Services Choir achieved second place in the ‘Champs’ category. Both choirs were awarded a prize of E80 000 each, a testament to their hard work and dedication. Gumbi further emphasised that the choirs’ performances in South Africa were indicative of a positive trend in artistic growth. “Their success in South Africa demonstrated a significant improvement in our performances and we take immense pride in that,” he said.
The president also added that the rise in the number of choirs is a significant achievement for them. “For several years, there was a lack of choirs in the Lubombo Region, but we are thrilled to have introduced a new choir from Siteki, the Emmanuel Methodist Church Choir. Remarkably, this new choir also made it to the finals in South Africa, which showcases the growth of music standards and the addition of new choirs in our country,” he said.

Enthusiastic

The Tiro Mpane Choral finale was more than just a competition; it served as a platform for these talented ensembles to showcase their hard work and passion on a grand stage. With robust government support and enthusiastic public backing, the choirs are poised to make a significant impact on the cultural landscape of Eswatini. Gumbi concluded with an optimistic outlook for the future, expressing his hopes for continued growth and excellence in Choral music. “We believe that with dedication and passion, our choirs will not only continue to shine locally, but will also compete on an international level. Our vision is to nurture talent and promote the rich musical heritage of Eswatini,” he said.
