MBABANE – The prestigious Metro FM Music Awards are here again.

Two artists from Eswatini received nominations this year: Phila Koshin and Zee Nxumalo. Koshin has been nominated in the ‘Best New Artist’ Category, while Nxumalo has garnered a nomination in the ‘Best Kwaito/Gqom’ Category for her collaboration with Dlala Thukzin, titled ‘Fomo’. This is a significant  representation compared to last year, when no local musicians were nominated for the awards. The awards are renowned for celebrating the rich and diverse musical expression found in South Africa. These awards highlight how music serves as a powerful force, bridging divides and connecting individuals through shared experiences and emotions.

Passion

For many artists, both established and emerging, the awards are an opportunity to showcase their hard work, creativity and passion for their craft. The recognition that comes with a nomination can be a pivotal moment in an artist’s career, potentially opening doors to new opportunities, collaborations and a broader audience.

Historically, local artists have been major contenders at various music awards.

The dynamic nature of the South African music industry means that artists must constantly innovate to remain relevant. Despite the challenges, Koshin and Nxumalo’s nominations signify that local talent is still making waves. Their achievements highlight the quality and creativity that exist within the kingdom’s burgeoning music scene.

Koshin has gained recognition for his unique sound and has made a mark in the local music industry with his distinct blend of genres. He continues to attract attention with his engaging performances and lyrical content that resonates with audiences. His nomination for ‘Best New Artist’ is a testament to his potential to rise further in the industry and contribute meaningfully to the rich musical tapestry of the region.

Culture

Zee Nxumalo, on the other hand, has carved out a niche for herself in the Amapiano, Kwaito and Gqom genres, genres that are deeply rooted in South African culture. Her collaboration with Dlala Thukzin on ‘Fomo’ demonstrates her ability to blend different musical styles while appealing to a broad audience. Nxumalo’s nomination serves as an encouragement for other local artists to explore collaborative efforts that could enhance their visibility and marketability.

As the Metro FM Music Awards loom closer, both Koshin and Nxumalo are gearing up to represent not only themselves, but also the burgeoning talent in Eswatini. The quest for excellence in music continues and the hope is that in future editions of the Metro Awards, more local talents will grace the nominations list and shining lights on Eswatini’s vibrant music scene. This year, the awards will take place on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at Mbombela Stadium.
