In the vibrant streets of Mbabane, a young artist named Praise Ngwenya, better known by his stage name ‘Praise Gee’ is carving out a niche for himself in the world of music. Born and raised in the spirited neighbourhood of Msunduza, Praise Gee’s journey is a testament to passion, resilience and the transformative power of music.

Praise Gee’s early years were spent immersed in creativity and inspiration. He attended John Wesley Primary School before moving on to Mater Dorolosa High School, where his love for music truly blossomed. At the tender age of 12, he discovered the captivating sounds of Maskandi, a traditional South African genre, while spending time with his uncle.

“We would sing together for hours,” he recalls fondly. This early exposure ignited a fire in him, leading him to write his own Maskandi songs, despite not having the means to record them at that time. Instead, he honed his skills through freestyle performances, allowing his creativity to flow freely.

Music became a refuge for Praise Gee, a lifeline that kept him away from the darker influences surrounding him.

“When I’m down, music lifts my spirit,” he explains. He often draws inspiration from the everyday experiences of his community, weaving stories and lessons into his lyrics. “I have to be representable; I need to lead by a good example,” he asserts. This commitment to maintaining a clean and educational message in his music reflects his desire to uplift others, particularly the youth in his society.

As the years passed, Praise Gee witnessed the evolution of the music landscape around him. With the guidance of his producer, BOYKID, he refined his craft, elevating the quality of his productions. “My vocals are now clean and relevant,” he says proudly. His music resonates with listeners of all ages, from the young to the old and he feels a sense of maturity in his artistry. “In my music, you get the full package,” he adds, highlighting the depth and richness he strives to achieve in every track.

Triumph

A pivotal moment in Praise Gee’s career came in 2023 when he had the opportunity to travel to the USA as one of six students selected from Mbabane schools. This experience was not only a personal triumph, but also a chance to showcase his talent on an international stage. He performed his hit song, Amaphupho, which features Young Zisto and Thijay, further solidifying his presence in the music industry.

“It was incredibly influential for my career,” he said acknowledging the doors that opened as a result of this journey.

Today, Praise Gee is riding a wave of inspiration, recently releasing a new single titled ‘Imali’ which is a poignant reflection of his life experiences and the challenges he has faced along the way. “It is about what I have gone through while I was schooling,” he said emphasising the motivational lyrics that he hopes the song will resonate with many, encouraging listeners to persevere despite adversity.

Praise Gee is ambitious, with dreams of taking his music beyond the borders of Eswatini and into the international arena. “I wish my music will go international and get booked in countries like the USA, as there is so much incredible talent here that is not being protected,” he said expressing with determination. He envisions establishing his own record label someday, contributing to the rich pool of talent in Eswatini that he believes deserves recognition.

Inspiration

Inspiration comes from various sources for Praise Gee, particularly from local legends like Sands, the hitmaker of ‘Tigi Tigi’ and influential artists such as IMfez’emnyama and Intaba yaseDubai. Their success serves as a guiding light for his own aspirations, reinforcing his belief that he too can achieve greatness.

Looking ahead, Praise Gee sees himself among the top artists in the country.

“I will be in the top 5,” he confidently declares, a testament to his unwavering dedication and hard work.

With each note he sings, he brings a piece of Mbabane to the world, proving that music has the power to transcend borders and connect souls. To be featured on the next wave column, you can share your details with us on WhatsApp, 7846 1354.
