THE ESSENCE OF STYLE AND MUSIC WITH GCEBILE
Today we feature one amazing lady that has been making your favourite musicians and personalities look the part on red carpets and events. Gcebile Maseko, a talented singer-songwriter and designer, expresses her honour and how passionate she is about merging music and fashion as forms of self-expression.
Born and raised in Emfeni (Ensingweni), she spent little time there due to her schooling, where her love for the arts was nurtured from an early age. Church was a safe haven for her, and it is where her passion for music blossomed.
memories of singing
She reminisces about fond memories of singing at family gatherings and Sunday school. At school, she participated in singing groups and enjoyed fellowship at gatherings known as Scripture Union (SU). Those formative experiences ignited her creativity and made her realise that both music and fashion are powerful storytelling tools that define who you are as an individual.
Maseko sees her greatest strength in her ability to connect with people. “I have a big loving heart, I think it’s what connects my career in singing and design. I’m able to work well with different kinds of people,’’ she mentions. Her strong intuition for emotions enables her to create pieces—whether songs or clothing—that resonates deeply with others. While her perfectionism can sometimes slow her down, she has learned to balance her pursuit of excellence with the wisdom of knowing when to let go and trust the process. “I am also a cry baby,” she admits, sharing that she sometimes pretends to be okay when she is not, although she is improving daily.
Authenticity and passion are at the core of her identity. Maseko believes in staying true to herself in both her creative work and personal life. “I don’t believe in following trends blindly, but rather in curating a style, both musically and fashion-wise, that feels unique and meaningful’.
self-acceptance
For Maseko, confidence stems from self-acceptance. “I know that I am enough just as I am,” she asserts. Feeling beautiful involves embracing her individuality, taking care of herself and creating a supportive environment.
Her songwriting process is deeply personal, rooted in her profound relationship with God. “Before being a Gospel singer, I am a born-again child of God, filled with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is my number one inspiration, guiding me on what to write and when to be relevant,’’ she shared . She also draws inspiration from real-life experiences and the storms she overcomes as a musician, believing that God gifts her with songs. “Music is my way of processing feelings,” she states, aiming to write songs that speak to and heal the heart.
As a child, Maseko looked up to her elder brother, a music director and teacher who played a significant role in shaping her music career. She grew up listening to artists like Benjamin Dube and Juanita Bynum, whose authenticity and storytelling ability through music inspired her own journey.
source of comfort
“I want my music to be a source of comfort, empowerment and joy,” she explains. Whether writing about the love of God, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, self-growth or resilience, her goal is to remind listeners that they are not alone. Her message is simple: ‘Embrace who you are and never be afraid to chase your dreams’.
In her work with clients, Maseko adopts a personalised approach. “Fashion should complement a person’s individuality,” she believes, taking the time to understand each client’s style, body type and personality before making recommendations. She also emphasises the importance of quality materials and timeless designs over fast fashion.
Maseko believes women play a crucial role in uplifting one another. “Celebrating each other’s successes instead of competing is the essence of empowerment,” she asserts.
To young women, her message is clear: ‘Love yourself enough to set boundaries, respect yourself enough to walk away from things that don’t serve you and believe in your worth. True beauty and confidence come from within’.
Reflecting on her journey, one of Maseko’s proudest moments in music came in 2023 when she won the Rising Star competition mentored by Mr Nduduzo Matse. This achievement led to her recording at the Mother of All Gospel Shows that same year, releasing her first album featuring two singles, ‘Nomanini Lizovela’ and ‘Singaba Yini Nkosi’ now available on all digital platforms. “It was just an Isaiah 60:22 moment of my life,” she recalls, performing on a grand stage at Mavuso Trade Centre alongside powerful Gospel artists from both local and international backgrounds.
In September 2024, she hosted a successful one-woman show titled ‘The Season of Grace’, where she recorded five new songs she wrote. In fashion, she opened her boutique GP Apparels in January 2024 at Zakhele.
blessing and honour
“It’s a blessing and an honour to turn people’s dreams into reality,” she expresses, adding that she is thrilled to dress celebrities in the kingdom for special events. Maseko aims to expand her brand to neighbouring countries, reminding herself why she does what she does and motivate herself to keep pushing forward.
Her sense of style blends elegance with timeless sophistication. Drawing inspiration from classic fashion icons, nature and cultural heritage, she believes in the art of balance when assembling an outfit—mixing textures, playing with silhouettes and accessorising thoughtfully. “Style is about confidence and knowing what works for you rather than following every trend,” Maseko concludes.
